2. African Union celebrates 50th anniversary
i. Africa's 54 leaders are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity.
ii. Opening the event, Ethiopian PM Hailemariam Desalegn spoke of "a great leap forward in the pan-African quest for freedom, independence and unity".
iii. AU head Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma warned that conflicts could be silenced only by "solidarity and unity".
iv. The OAU, which became the African Union (AU) in 2002, had its origins in the struggle for decolonisation. Since it was founded in 2002, the AU's aim has been to push for peace and prosperity.
v. It was founded in Addis Ababa in 1963, the venue chosen to mark the anniversary 50 years on.
vi. But while its successor has adopted a policy of seeking African solutions to internal problems, it has been criticised for failing to respond quickly enough when rebels seized power in Mali in 2012.
vii. Among the dignitaries attending Saturday's ceremony was US Secretary of State John Kerry, who warned Nigeria's armed forces to avoid human rights abuses in their campaign against Islamist extremists.
viii. The only African country not part of the AU is Morocco, which withdrew because of a dispute over Western Sahara.
ix. AFRICAN leaders have opened celebrations for the 50th jubilee of the continental bloc, with Africa's myriad problems set aside for a day to mark the progress that has been made.
x. African Union (AU) chairman and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, in a speech to open the ceremony on Saturday, said the celebrations would look forward to "create a continent free from poverty and conflict and an Africa whose citizens enjoy a middle income status".
3. R K Mathur appointed as Defence Secretary
i. Senior IAS officer Radha Krishna Mathur was on Saturday appointed Defence Secretary to succeed Shashikant Sharma who has taken over as Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

iii. A 1977-batch IAS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre, Mr Mathur was serving as Secretary (Defence Production) in the Defence Ministry.
iv. Born on November 25, 1953, he has done his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and M.Tech in Industrial Engineering from IIT, Delhi.
v. As Secretary (Defence Production), Mr Mathur has been involved in modernisation process of the defence public sector undertakings and Ordnance Factories under his department.
4. Dayamani Barla Selected for Cultural Survival’s Ellen L. Lutz Indigenous Rights Award
i. On April 23, 2013 in recognition of her work with Adivasi (Indigenous) communities in India, Dayamani Barla was chosen by Cultural Survival, an Indigenous Peoples rights organization, as the winner of the 2013 Ellen L. Lutz Indigenous Rights Award.

5. Srinivasan refuses to resign as BCCI chief
i. BCCI President N.Srinivasan remained defiant on Saturday rejecting demands for his resignation but moves are said to be afoot to oust him in the wake of arrest of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan on betting charges.
ii. Arriving in Mumbai today, he made it clear that he has no intention of resigning as he has done nothing wrong.
iii. The 68-year-old cricket board chief, who has been facing mounting pressure to quit, said BCCI would follow strictly all its rules and law will take its course.
iv. The term of Mr. Srinivasan ends in September this year and under an amended rule he can continue till next year September. But under the present circumstances, such a scenario looks far from remote.
v. Meanwhile, Gurunath’s arrest has raised questions over the continuance of Chennai Super Kings but as yet there seems to be no threat to the team playing the final tomorrow.
6. IPL 6: Mumbai in final, beat Rajasthan by four wickets
i. Mumbai Indians overcame middle over hiccups to carve out a thrilling four-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in a thrilling match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday to set up a summit showdown with Chennai Super Kings in the Pepsi Indian Premier League.
ii. Mumbai Indians almost choked in the middle yet again but some sensible batting by young Rishi Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh helped them pip Rajasthan.
iii. There was a little twist in the tale when Royals took three wickets -- Karthik (22), Rohit Sharma (2) and the prized-scalp of Smith -- in successive overs to leave them at 132 for four in 16.3 overs.
iv. There was more drama in store when James Faulkner dismissed Pollard in the next over with 25 runs needed from 15 balls and with five wickets in hand.
v. With six needed from four, young Rishi Dhawan, who was included in place of Munaf Patel, showed amazing calm in pressure situation as he walked across the crease before hitting a boundary with a scoop shot that almost settled the issue for Mumbai.
7. Hockey India senior men's nationals in Pune from 28th May
i. The 3rd Hockey India senior men's national championship is to be held in Pune at the Shiv Chattrapati Sports Complex and Major Dhyan Chand Hockey stadium in nearby Pimpri town from 28th May to 10th June.
ii. The participating teams, numbering 37, have been divided into 8 pools and the toppers of each pool will make it to the quarter finals, said event Organising Secretary and Joint Secretary of HI Manoj Bhore at a news conference on Friday.
iii. The tournament is supported by the Maharashtra Olympic Association and the Department of Sports and Youth Services of the State Government, said Bhore.
iv. Pune had previously hosted the inaugural Hockey India junior men's nationals in 2011.
8. CSK owner Meiyappan arrested in IPL betting case
i. Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI President N Srinivasan and owner of Chennai Super Kings, was arrested on Friday night for his alleged involvement in IPL betting scandal, raising serious doubts about continuance of the franchise in the hugely popular T20 league.
ii. Meiyappan was arrested after nearly two-and-a-half hours of questioning that began at 9.30 pm.
iii. The 35-year-old top honcho of CSK, twice IPL champions, was in the eye of a huge storm after actor and TV reality show winner Vindoo Dara Singh, arrested for his alleged links to bookies, admitted to having placed bets on his behalf.
iv. The crime branch, according to sources, had call data records of conversations between Vindoo and Meiyappan and they are learnt to have confronted the two with the transcripts.
