DAILY GK UPDATE 26TH JANUARY

1. Nation celebrates 64th Republic Day:
   i. The Nation celebrated the 64th Republic Day today with special parades and display of the rich cultural heritage and the armed forces might and achievements in various fields.
To mark the day, several states announced welfare programmes and setting up of fast track courts to deal with crimes against women.
NOTE: Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck with his Queen Jetsun Pema was the Chief Guest at the 64th Republic Day Celebrations in New Delhi on Saturday becoming the third emperor from the tiny kingdom to grace the event, signifying the importance that India attaches to its neighbour.

2.108 eminent persons get Padma Awards:
    i. Pranab Mukherjee, the President of Union of India on 25 January 2013 approved conferment of 108 Padma Awards.
    ii. Four people have been conferred with Padma Vibhusan, twenty four are conferred with Padma Bhushan and 80 people would be receiving Padma Shree Awards. Out of all the awardees twenty-four are ladies and 11 people belong to categories like NRIs, PIOs, Foreigners and Posthumous awardees.
   Padma Awards:
   i. Padma Awards are the highest Civilian Awards and are conferred to people in three different categories namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
  ii. These Awards are conferred on people for the work done by them in different categories including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, and many more.
 iii. Padma Vibhusan is conferred on the people for the exceptional and distinguished services done by them
 iv. Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order
v. Padma Shri is given to a person for his/her distinguished service in any field.
These awards are announced on the eve of Republic Day celebration and are conferred by the President of India at a function organised at Rastrapati Bhawan.

3. Victoria Azarenka wins Australian Open women's title:
i. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has won the Women’s Singles title of the Australian Open Tennis tournament at Melbourne.
ii. The World Number One defeated Li Na of China, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final on Saturday to win the title for the second successive time.

4. American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won the men's doubles title
Top seeded American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won the men's doubles title. They defeated Dutch pair of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling, 6-3, 6-4 in the final on Saturday.
NOTE: Bryans brothers win record 13th Grand Slam doubles title.


5. Australian Open: Murray stuns Federer, meets Novak in final:
i. Andy Murray became the first Briton to reach three Australian Open finals after ending his Grand Slam hoodoo against Roger Federer in a five-set thriller.
ii. Murray had never beaten the Swiss at a major but was a deserved 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-7 (2/7), 6-2 winner on Friday as he moved into Sunday's title decider against Novak Djokovic.

 
6. Dharamsala set to host fifth ODI between India-England:
In Himachal Pradesh , the Dharamshala, a lovely hill town located in the lap of Himalayan foothills is all set to host the 5th and last one day international cricket match of current series between India and England at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium on Sunday.
The match will start at 9. 30 AM in the morning.
NOTE: Chief minister Virbhadra Singh along with Dalai Lama are to be the chief guests.
