1. India celebrates its 66TH Independence day
Independence Day was celebrated with great patriotism and enthusiasm all over the country and abroad among Indians.
2. The House Sparrow was declared as State Bird of Delhi
The House Sparrow was declared as state bird of Delhi by the state government. The new status of the bird is likely to help in its conservation. Delhi government announced the decision after launching a campaign "Rise for the Sparrows".
3. Ministry of Environment and Forest issued Advisory to reduce the Impact of Communication Towers
Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) issued an advisory to reduce the negative impact of Electro Magnetic Radiations emanating from the communication towers on the recommendations made by an expert panel, constituted to Study the possible Impacts of Communication Towers on Wildlife including Birds and Bees.
4. Government of India enacted the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA) 2006
The Act will cover all the States and Union Territories of India except the State of Jammu & Kashmir and also applies to all citizens of India without and beyond India.
Under the PCMA 2006, every child marriage is voidable at the option of the contracting party who was a child at the time of the marriage, within two years of the child attaining majority.
PCMA 2006 replaced Child Marriage Restraint Act (CMRA) of 1929.
5. Pakistan Government honoured Gopi Chand Narang with Sitara-i-Imtiaz
Pakistan government on 14 August 2012 honoured Urdu author, Gopi Chand Narang with sitara-i-Imtiaz, the third highest civilian honour given by the nation.
The award will be given to Gopi Chand Narang in Pakistan on 23 March, 2013, Pakistan's Republic Day.
6. Inter-ministerial group recommended Linking Patented Drug Prices to Per-capita Income
An inter-ministerial group formed in 2007 and entrusted with the responsibility of regulating prices of patented medicines recommended using a per capita income-linked reference pricing mechanism. The proposal by the group is expected to reduce prices of several patented dugs by up to one-third. However it will hit the profitability of foreign companies.
7. Government will set up 14 more Income Tax Overseas Units (ITOUs)
ITOUs will be setup to deal with the menace of black money and keep a tab on illegal routing of funds from abroad and parking money in foreign countries.
India has already established ten Income Tax Overseas Units in its missions at Cyprus, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, the UAE, the UK, the USA, Mauritius and Singapore.
8. Scientists Unveiled the Origin of the Singing Mice
Scientists discovered the origin of singing mice that use songs to communicate. The scientists stated that this can help identify genes that affect language in humans.
The singing mice are brown fur rodents instead of the normal white ones, they are found in the tropical cloud forests in the mountains of Costa Rica. Apparently, the song of the singing mice is a rapid-fire string of high pitched chirps called trills , which are used mostly by males to attract mates.
9. China signed Economic Agreements with North Korea which includes the Development of SEZs
China in the second week of August 2012 signed agreements with North Korea to increase the bilateral economic co-operation with North Korea.
The agreements included the development of two special economic zones in North Korea. Both these countries also signed agreements on agricultural co-operation and electricity supply.
10 . Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia has urged the Government not to lose sight of the concept of judicial independence while bringing laws.
Speaking on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations in the Supreme Court, he said that the government may make law for making judges accountable but it should not tinker with the independence of the judiciary. The Chief Justice said that the Government must take the opinion of various jurists and take into account various developments around the world before making law.
11. Pakistan freed 55 Indian fishermen on Indian Independence day
Pakistan today freed 55 Indian fishermen, including 15 teenagers, from a jail in the southern port city of Karachi as a goodwill gesture on the occasion of India's Independence Day.
