DAILY GK UPDATE: 18th SEPTEMBER 2012

1. Rajiv Mehta appointed as New Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau
Rajiv Mehta is appointed as a Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on 18 September 2012. His appointment will be on deputation basis for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or till the date of his superannuation or until further orders.
2. Pakistan test fired cruise missile, Babur
Pakistan successfully test fired nuclear-capable Babur cruise missile with a range of 700 km (435 miles). It is a low flying, terrain-hugging missile that can be used against targets at land and sea with pin-point accuracy.
NOTE:- The missile was launched from a multi-tube missile launch vehicle that extensively enhances the targeting and deployment options of the Babur system. The missile is designed to avoid radar detection and penetrate enemy air defenses.
3. World Bank appointed Onno Ruhl as the country director for India
World Bank appointed Onno Ruhl a Dutch National to be the country director for India.  He will replace the retiring N Roberto Zagha in October 2012. His appointment at this post will help the bank to formulate and implement developmental programs and steps in the nation.
4. Mamata Banerjee pulls out of UPA, says TMC Ministers to resign
The Trinamool Congress has decided to withdraw support to the UPA Government in protest against their anti-people policies. Announcing this after an emergency meeting in Kolkata a shortwhile ago, the party Supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms. Mamta Banerjee said that Ministers of Trinamool Congress will submit their resignation to the Prime Minister.
5. FICCI General Secretary Rajiv Kumar Resigned
Rajiv Kumar, secretary-general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry  left the industry association because he wanted to return to academics.
6. China signed 16 new Agreements with Sri Lanka
China signed 16 major agreements with Sri Lanka in Colombo on a range of issues, from visa exemption and marine development to economic and technology cooperation. China also promised to expand investment and increase imports from Sri Lanka. China and Sri Lanka agreed that holders of diplomatic and service passports of the other nation will be exempt from visa requirements. China-Sri Lanka bilateral trade volume reached 3.14 billion dollars in 2011.
7. Delhi Government to Provide subsidized Gas Cylinders to Jhuggi Ration Card Holders
The Delhi state Government announced to provide three subsidised cooking gas cylinders to the Antodaya Anna Yojana, Below Poverty Line and Jhuggi Ration Card holders in the national capital. These will be in addition to the six subsidised cylinder limit announced by the Union government of India.
The move will benefit over 3.56 lakh such card holders of the city.
8. India signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt
India and Egypt today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in New Delhi to establish an institutional framework for their ongoing cooperation in the field of election management and administration.
The major aims of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) are:
(a) Promotion of exchanges of knowledge and experience in the field of organizational and technical development, with a view to strengthening the administration of electoral processes.
(b) Exchange of information, material, expertise and technical knowhow relating to electoral processes and systems; training of personnel and development of human resources.
(c) Organizational development and capacity building.
 MoU was made so that it can facilitate sharing of best practices, skills and experiences between the two institutions for mutual benefit.
9.India Offered Telecom Support to Turkmenistan
India has assured Turkmenistan of all cooperation in Information and Communication technology (ICT) for the mutual benefit of both the countries.
It was decided in the inaugural session of TurkmenTEL 2012 at the Turkmenistan capital Ashgabat by the Minister for Communications & IT and HRD, Kapil Sibal.
10. US and Japan agreed to deploy advanced missile defense system
The United States and Japan announced an agreement to set up second advanced missile defense radar on Japanese province. It is an effort which is distinctively designed to counter the ballistic missile threat from North Korea.
The radar which is named as X-band radar is meant to protect Japan as well as the U.S. homeland.
11. HDFC Bank announced the Launch of Credit Card for Teachers
HDFC Bank announced the launch of credit card for teachers, coinciding with the celebration of Teachers Day. The card offers special features like multiple reward points, weekend bonanza points, petrol surcharge waiver and 500 special gift reward points to be credited annually on the Teachers day.
12. HDFC Bank Commissioned its 10001st ATM at Kovalam
HDFC Bank commissioned its 10001st Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram city, Kerala. The launch of the 10001st ATM in Kerala follows the inauguration of the 10000th ATM, commissioned last week in Ajmer Sharif, Rajasthan.
13. Tech Mahindra acquired 51% stake in Comviva Technologies
Tech Mahindra on 17 September 2012 acquired 51% stake in Comviva technology limited for 260 crore.The new brand identity is now called as Mahindra Comviva, which reflects combined strength and spirit of both the entities.
NOTE:- With this Tech Mahindra enters into the world of Mobility Products and is set to build portfolio in Mobile VAS, Mobile Money and Mobile payments space.
14. Mariamma Koshy appointed as the full-time President of Hockey India
Hockey India appointed Mariamma Koshy of Hockey Kerala as its new full-time President. The decision was made during the 15th meet of Board Executives and was taken following the guidelines prescribed under rule 4(f) of Hockey India Rules and Regulations.
15. Golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar grabbed third Asian tour title
Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar wrapped up a four-shot victory at the Yeangder tournament players Championship in Chinese Taipei.
