R Lakshmipathy, the publisher of Tamil daily Dinamalar, was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Press Trust of India (PTI) after the company's Annual General Meeting (AGM).
2. Justice Murugesan sworn in as the New Chief Justice of Delhi High Court
Justice Darmar Murugesan, the former judge of the Madras High Court sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He replaced the acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri, who was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
3. Dr. Sima Samar jointly wins Swedish Right Livelihood Award
Dr. Sima Samar, well known human rights and women’s right advocate and activist of Afghanistan has jointly won prestigious Swedish Right Livelihood Award.
Dr. Sima Samar who is currently the Chairperson of Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission, has shared this award with American political theorist Gene Sharp.
4. Waheeda Rehman to receive Lifetime Achievement Award during 14th Mumbai Film Festival
Waheeda Rehman, the veteran actress of Bollywood has been nominated to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented to the actress during the forthcoming 14th Mumbai Film Festival starting from 18 October 2012.
5. US, India and Afghanistan hold its First Trilateral Discussion
US, India and Afghanistan hold its first ever trilateral meeting on 25 September 2012. The major point of discussion was on the situation in Afghanistan along with the issue of terrorism.
6. Indian Sovereign Rating is Stable-Moody
Rating agency Moody's Investors Services in its Outlook for India expected stability due to the newly announced reforms (FDI & hike in petrol rates). It believed that these reforms will help India in pairing up of the fiscal deficits.
NOTE:- Indian sovereign credit rating outlook was kept by the agency at “Baa3” for the medium term.
7. India Malaysia to achieve a target trade of USD 15 Million
India is going to expand bilateral trade with Malaysia to $15 billion by 2013 from $13 billion in 2011-12 as per the discussion in India- Malaysia CEO Forum.
It was informed by Union Minister of Commerce, Industry and Textiles, Anand Shrama that India’s bilateral trade with Malaysia stood at nearly $13 billion in 2011-12 registering a growth of 34% over the previous year.
8. Sundar Rajan appointed as New Executive Director of Ashok Leyland
Ashok Leyland appointed Sundar Rajan as its new Executive Director (Legal).
NOTE:- Sundar Rajan is 46 years old and a law graduate who started his career as an advocate from the Madras high court.
9. Professor Banwarilal Sharma, the mathematician and a Gandhian activist passed away
Professor Banwarilal Sharma, the mathematician and a Gandhian activist died on 26 September 2012 at Chandigarh.
NOTE:- He served Allahabad University as former HOD of Mathematics department. Prof. Banwarilal Sharma also served International Council of Mathematicians in developing countries for 6 years in between 1986 to 1992, as its chairman.
10. CSIR announced Fellowship program for Scientists aged above 70
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on its 70th Foundation Day celebration on 26 September 2012 greeted the scientists aged above 70 years with research fellowships.
The fellowship will offer a sum of Rs 20 lakh per year for continuous 5 years to scientists who will guide students and publish research papers. A scientist who has won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award is eligible for the fellowship program.
11. Union Cabinet of India approved the Demands of Ex-servicemen for One Rank One Pension
Union Cabinet of India, under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 24 September 2012 approved the long awaited demand for One Rank One Pension (OROP) and other benefits of ex-servicemen. The cabinet also gave a nod for enhancement of pension for family and dual family pension. The approved demand will cost the government about Rs 2300 crore per year.
The cabinet also approved family pension grants for mentally or physically challenged children of personnel from armed forces.
12. Pakistani-origin women appointed as Norwegian Cultural Minister
Hadia Tajik, a 29 year old women of Pakistani origin was appointed as Norwegian Cultural Minister. Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg appointed her to this post during the cabinet reshuffle activity. She is the youngest minister and first Muslim in the Norwegian Political history.
13. Cairn Energy sold 8 percent stake in Cairn India
British oil and gas exploration and production company Cairn Energy plc on sold 8 per cent stake in Cairn India for a net realization of about US Dollar 910 million.
14. Ex cricketer Sandeep Patil is New BCCI Chief selector
Former cricketer Sandeep Patil has been appointed as the Chairman of the Indian cricket selection committee. The new selection committee was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mumbai today.
15. Centre to release 40 lakh tons of non-levy sugar for Oct, Nov 2012
The Centre has decided to release 40 lakh tons of non-levy sugar for October and November this year. An official release says, sugar factories have to sell and deliver or dispatch the entire quantity within the validity period of the release order from 1st October to 30th November on condition that a minimum quantity of 45 per cent be sold off and dispatched or delivered in one of these months. The Centre has also released 3.96 lakh tons of levy sugar for the same months for the direct allottee states.
