DAILY GK UPDATE: 26TH NOVEMBER

1. Rich tributes were paid to the martyrs and victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks 
Rich tributes were paid to the martyrs and victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks amidst tight security in Mumbai today.
NOTE:- Union Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Union Agricultural Minister Sharad Pawar paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the memorial at the Police gymkhana in South Mumbai on the fourth anniversary of the attacks. Scores of people participated in various peace walks, and commemorative events at CST railway station, Leopold café, hotel trident, nariman house, marine drive and other targets which were attacked by terrorists during 26/11 attacks.
2. UN Conference on Climate Change gets underway in Doha
United Nations Conference on Climate Change got underway in Doha amid global concerns to limit the greenhouse gas emissions and the divide among the developing and the developed nations.
NOTE:- More than 17000 delegates from 194 countries will discuss another extension to Kyoto Protocol for cutting emissions by developed nations and bringing sustainable development for the developing countries to the fore.
3. Rory Mcllroy wins Dubai World Tour Golf Championship
World Champion, Rory Mcllroy has won the Dubai World Tour Golf Championship and retained his number one title at the end of the season in 2012.
NOTE:- England’s Justin Rose came second. Mcllroy was tied with his arch rival Luke Donald in the fourth and the final round, but came out with a superb finish in the decider to bag the title.
4. Chitra Ramakrishna to become MD & CEO of NSE on 1st April 2013
Chitra Ramakrishna will be the Managing Director and CEO of National Stock Exchange from 1st April 2013, while its current chief Ravi Narain will assume the role of Vice-Chairman in a non-executive role.
NOTE:- At a meeting held in Mumbai on Monday, the board of the National Stock Exchange decided that Ramkrishna, currently Joint MD of the bourse, will take charge as MD and CEO with effect from 1st April 2013 for a period of five years.
5. Agro Tech-2012 to begin in Chandigarh on 1st December
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Monday announced 10th edition of country’s only integrated biennial agriculture fair, Agro Tech-2012. It will be held at the Parade ground of Sector –17 in Chandigarh from 1st to 4th December.
NOTE:- Chairman of Agro Tech-2012, Mr. Gokul Patnaik said that it would be a technology and business fair with participation of 45 foreign exhibitors from eight countries besides a large number of Indian exhibitors.
6. Bill introduced to set up two Central universities in Bihar
A bill, which would enable setting up of two Central universities in Bihar was introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday. The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2012 was introduced by HRD Minister MM Pallam Raju amid din over the FDI in retail issue.
NOTE:- The amendment will enable opening a central university in Motihari in addition to the one in Gaya, which is already functioning from a temporary location. The Act had a provision for setting two Central universities in Jammu and Kashmir as a special case.
The University in Motihari will be named as Central University of North Bihar and the one at Gaya will be named as Central University of South Bihar.
7. India and Sweden sign pact to enhance cooperation on social security
India and Sweden have signed an agreement to enhance bilateral cooperation on social security issues. The agreement was signed by Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and Minister of Social Security in Sweden Ulf Kristersson in New Delhi.
NOTE:- There are about 18 thousand overseas Indians in Sweden working as self-employed and professionals. New Delhi has also signed similar agreements with Belgium, Germany, Canada and Japan among others.
8. India and China sign 11 pacts to enhance trade and economic ties
India and China have signed 11 pacts on Monday for further deepening of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. 4 MOU's were inked in public sector and seven agreements in the private sector involving 5.2 billion US dollars. On the 2nd Indo-China Strategic Economic Dialogue in New Delhi, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia said, both countries have also agreed to address the trade imbalance between the two countries.
NOTE 1:-  MoUs were signed in areas of improving energy efficiency, technical cooperation in Railways, Cooperation in Information Technology and joint studies between Planning commission and the Chineese Reform commission.
NOTE 2:-The agreements were signed for 2500 MW renewable energy project worth 3 US billion dollars investment between Reliance Energy and Guangdong Mingyang Wind Power with project financing from China Development Bank.
NOTE 3:-Other agreements include Lanco group's, 600 US million dollars Anpara Phase II 4 X660 MW power project, USD 800 million deal between NIIT and Hainan province for Knowledge park, 384 US million dollars joint venture Waste to energy projects on Build Operate Transfer basis in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai.

9. 270 million enrolled under UID in 3 years
Unique Identification (UID) project has enrolled 270 million people in last three years and the data collected through it can be used to provide various benefits like direct cash transfer to cardholders. UID project chief Nandan Nilekani Monday expressed the need to make the project irreversible by providing "compelling services" to the people.
10. EGoM studies issues related to 3rd phase of radio expansion
Government has said that an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) was studying several issues related to the third phase of expansion of radio that were either not covered by the existing Cabinet decision or had risen during the implementation. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said that issues being considered by the EGoM included the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's recommendation to reduce inter channel spacing to 400 KHZ from the present 800 KHz.
11. Government to transfer subsidies directly into beneficaries' accounts from 1st Jan. 2013
Government will start direct cash transfers of subsidies into beneficaries' bank accounts in 51 districts across the country through the Aadhar based system from 1st January 2013.
NOTE:- Addressing the first meeting of the National Committee on Direct Cash Transfers, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that Direct Cash Transfer will open the doors for eliminating waste, cutting down leakages and targeting benificiaries better.
12. K Venukuttan Nair, a well known theatre personality as well as the Malayalam film actor passed away

K Venukuttan Nair, 81, a well known theatre personality as well as the Malayalam film actor died on 26 November 2012 at Thiruvananthapuram because of brief illness. 
NOTE:- Nair was a respected personality in theatre circles in the state of Kerala. Nair had also received state government award for the best drama director four times. Nair is survived by his wife.
