DAILY GK UPDATE: 30th DECEMBER

1. UN chief expresses sorrow at death of Delhi gang-rape victim:

Note: UN chief Ban Ki-moon has voiced "deep sorrow" at the death of the 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim, asking the Indian government to implement reforms to deter such crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice. He said "Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated. Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected”.
 Millions of Indians held candle-light vigils and protests demanding immediate action from the government to punish perpetrators of the heinous crime and strengthen laws that deal with violence against women.
2. Name of interview board members can't be revealed under RTI: Supreme Court

Note: The Supreme Court has ruled that the names of the members of an interview board, set up to select candidates for government jobs, cannot be divulged under the RTI Act as it might endanger their lives. "The disclosure of names and addresses of the members of the interview board would ex facie endanger their lives or physical safety. The possibility of a failed candidate attempting to take revenge from such persons cannot be ruled out," a bench of justices Swatanter Kumar and S J Mukhopadhaya said. The apex court set aside the order of the Patna High Court which had directed Bihar Public Service Commission to reveal the names and addresses of the members of the interview board which had cleared the names of candidate for job in Police Laboratory in Crime Investigation Department of the state.

Note: Indian maths genius Srinivasa Ramanujan’s cryptic deathbed theory which he claimed was conceived in his dreams was finally proved by American scientist in the month of November. In 1920, while on his death-bed, Ramanujan wrote a letter to his mentor, English mathematician G H Hardy, outlining several new mathematical functions never heard of before, along with a hunch about how they worked. Quoting the Researchers report the Daily Mail newspaper reported that Mr. Ramanujan was right and that the formula could explain the behaviour of black holes. Researchers say they have solved the problems from his last mysterious letters. The findings were presented in November at a Ramanujan conference held at the University of Florida, ahead of the 125th anniversary of the Ramanujan 's birth on 22 December.

Note: In Assam, the 14th North East Book Fair has begun today in Guwahati organised by All Assam Book Publishers and Sellers Association. A total of 135 publishing houses from across the country have taken part in the North -East book fair .The organizer said that 254 stalls have been set up and fair will be concluded on 10th January 2013.
5. Indian I-League football Club Mohun Bagan banned for 2 Years:

Note: Iconic football club Mohun Bagan was on Saturday handed a two-year ban from the I-League by the All India Football Federation for abandoning the violence-marred derby match against East Bengal on December 9. Justice Ganguly in his report concluded that the decision of Mcdowell Mohun Bagan (MMB) for not playing the match after the interval cannot be supported on the grounds of Force Majeure and accordingly MMB has breached Regulation 22 of the I-League Regulation 2012-2013.In effect, this season will have 13 teams now.

6. World No 1, Djokovick retains Abu Dhabi World Tennis title:
Note: World Number 1 and the defending champion Novak Djokovick has retained Abu Dhabi World Tennis Championship title beating Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-7, 6-4,6-3. The Nicolas won the first set on a tie breaker but Djokovick came from behind in the second and third set to prove his class as the World Number one. his is the last tennis tournament of the calendar year 2012.
7. India stands 3rd in latest T20 ranking:

Note: The International Cricket Council, ICC has released the latest T-20 rankings. India stands third in the ranking behind Sri Lanka and West Indies.Among Indian players, Virat Kohli at fifth, Suresh Raina at eighth and Yuraj Singh at eleventh figure in top 15 batsmen ‘s list. Among the batsmen Australia’s Shane Watson is at number one followed by Kiwi Brendon Mccallum and Chris Gayle.

Note: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s heroic unbeaten century under pressure went in vain as arch rivals Pakistan held their nerve to clinch the first one day international with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest in Chennai on Sunday. India posted 227 for six after recovering from a precarious 29 for five one stage but that turned out to be insufficient for the Pakistanis who rode on Nasir Jamshed’s unbeaten century to overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
9. Australian Cricketer Michael Hussey Announced Retirement from Test Cricket:
Note: Australian veteran Michael Hussey on 29 December 2012 announced that he would retire from Test cricket after playing the final match of the series against Sri Lanka at Sydney starting on 3 January 2012. However Hussey will continue playing the ODI tri-series involving Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka which will be his last international assignment. Hussey has till now played 78 Tests scoring 6183 runs including 19 centuries and 29 half centuries at an impressive average of 51.52.
