ENGLISH VOCAB - III

1.    Halcyon: Happy
Usage: The halcyon days of one’s youth.
2.    Hiatus: A gap
Usage: There will be a two weeks hiatus before the talks can be resumed.
3.    Hirsute (adj): hairy
Usage: A hirsute dog moving on the road.
4.    Horrendous(adj): horrible
Usage: Horrendous problem in our families.
5.    Hortatory (adj): advising
Usage: Hortatory talks to the employees.
6.     Idyllic (adj): peaceful: beautiful
Usage: An idyllic cottage/scenery.
7.    Imminent (adj): likely to happen anything wrong
Usage: Seeing the cloud my friend said.”Rain is imminent.
8.    Impeccable (adj): faultless; without any mistake
Usage: His written English is impeccable.
9.    Impolitic( adj): Not wise
Usage: It might be impolitic to refuse his order.
10.  Impugn(v): challenged as false
Usage: impugn somebody’s motives.
11.  Jaunty (adj): feeling self-confidence
Usage: A Jaunty tune/rhythm.
12.  Jocund (adj): pleasant; cheerful
Usage: The little girl’s jocund manners of speaking were attractive.
13.  Jettison (v): to throw unnecessary things from a ship aircraft etc.
Usage: The tankers were jettisoning crude oil.
14.  Jeer (v): to laugh rudely
Usage: Jeer at the speaker.
15.  Jib(v): to refuse; to unwilling to accept
Usage: He jibbed when I told him the price.
16.   Killjoy (N): person who destroys other people’s enjoyment.
Usage: He behaves like a killjoy.
17.  Knackers (v): to make somebody very tired
Usage: This writing work knackered the whole day.
18.  Limbo (n): in an unfinished and uncertain state
Usage: the project was in limbo until the committee made its decision.
19.  Labyrinth (n): confusion; maze
Usage: A person suffering from labyrinth.
20.  Loopy (adj): crazy
Usage: It sounds a loopy idea to me.
