DAILY GK UPDATE 17 & 18TH FEB.

1.    Australia win Women's World Cup for sixth time
i. Australia clinched their sixth Women's World Cup title after they comfortably defeated the West Indies by a huge margin of 114 runs in the final at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
ii. Needing 260 to win, the Caribbeans were bundled out for 145 runs in 43.1 overs, miserably failing to recover from Elysse Perry's early three-wicket burst.
iii. Australia took home a prize money of USD 75,000 along with the distinction of being the top ranked team in the world, while runners up West Indies received USD 30,000.

2.    British PM arrives on three-day India visit
i. British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Mumbai on Monday morning on a three-day India visit during which he will meet captains of industry and hold talks with top leaders who are likely to seek more information on the VVIP helicopters scam involving an Anglo-Italian firm.
ii. Cameron is likely to be pressed for more information on the Rs 3,600 crore helicopter scam involving AgustaWestland during his meetings with the leadership on Tuesday.
iii. The visit also comes in the wake of India taking steps to scrap the contract after Italian investigators probed allegations that aerospace group Finmeccanica, the parent company of AgustaWestland, had broken the law by paying bribes to foreign officials.
iv. Besides the defence deal, other major issues expected to figure during Cameron's visit would include the Rs 12,000- crore Vodafone tax matter and the UK hosting a meeting between the Pakistan and Afghanistan Presidents.

3.    SBI’s net profit rises 4% to Rs 3,400 crore
i. India leading public sector bank, the State Bank of India's (SBI) has recorded a 4 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 3,400 crore during the third quarter of the financial year.
ii. The increase in net profit of just 4 per cent was mainly due to lower net interest income, which is the difference between interest earned and paid out.
iii. The bank's net interest income fell about 3 per cent to Rs 11,154 crore during the third quarter from October to December, 2012 compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
iv. The bank also said that the bank's net NPA ratio increased to 2.58 per cent compared with 2.44 per cent.
 
4.    President confers Indira Gandhi Prize on Ela Bhatt
i. Noted social worker Ela Ramesh Bhatt was on Monday conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development by President Pranab Mukherjee.
ii. Bhatt, the founder of Self-Employed Women's Association,was conferred the Indira Gandhi Prize for 2011 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
iii. The Prize has been awarded to Bhatt for her lifetime achievements in comprehensively empowering women in India and elsewhere through grassroots entrepreneurship.
iv. The Prize carries a citation and a cash award of Rs 25 lakh.

5.    India-US Joint Working Group held its 10th Meeting in Washington
i. The India-U.S.Joint Working Group on UN Peacekeeping held its 10th meeting in Washington on 13 February 2013.
ii. At the meeting, India and the United States advanced a number of goals laid out in the Declaration of Principles the Joint Working Group agreed upon in 2011.
iii. India and USA welcomed the open and comprehensive nature of the discussions, and agreed the talks helped advance their shared commitment to supporting and strengthening United Nations peacekeeping operations, and their mutual interest in assuring the success of UN peacekeeping missions.
iv. Both nations agreed that the 11th meeting of the Working Group will be held in New Delhi in 2014.

6.    NACO signed MoU with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to Highlight Issues related to AIDS
i. National AIDS Control Organisation(NACO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare signed the first MoU with the Ministry of Shipping as a part of its efforts to highlight issues relating to HIV/AIDS.
ii. According to the MoU, NACO will provide HIV/AIDS/STI preventive, care support and treatment services to port workers as well as community around major ports including fishermen, seafarers, truckers, single male migrants and other vulnerable population etc.
iii. It also aims to provide stigma free environment and promote greater involvement of people living with HIV in all major port areas.

7.    Uninor shuts telecom operations in Mumbai over SC order on 2G licences
i. Telecom operator Uninor closed down its mobile network operations in Mumbaion Sunday after the Supreme Court on Saturday ordered all operators that did not win spectrum in the previous auctions to close down services immediately.
ii. The company intimated all its customers and business partners that for now the Uninor network in Mumbai will not be available after midnight on February 16, 2013.
iii. Operations in six circles of Maharashtra and Goa, Gujarat, UP East, UP West, Bihar and Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh will continue as fresh spectrum for 20 years has already been secured.
iv. Uninor is likely to sign roaming agreements with other operators to ensure that all Uninor customers get seamless connectivity when travelling to Mumbai.

8.    Victoria Azarenka Defeats Serena Williams to Win 2013 Qatar Open
i. Victoria Azarenka may have lost her No. 1 ranking, but the Belarusianstar did bag her 16th career title by defeating Serena Williams in the final at the 2013 Qatar Open to win the tournament
ii. Despite losing to Azarenka, Williams seized the No. 1 ranking simply by advancing to the final, but Azarenka put an end to the American legend's dominance and won her first match in 10 tries against Williams.
