DAILY GK UPDATE 29TH MARCH

1. Good Friday' being observed today
i. The "Good Friday", the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified, is being observed today across the world.

ii. Good Friday is the culmination of the Lent for the Roman Catholics as well as the Holy week, which is observed on Palm Sunday, and it takes place two days before the Easter Sunday that is being celebrated this year on 31st March around the world.
iii. In most of the churches across the State, believers congregated in large numbers for special prayers to commemorate the passion, suffering and the death of Christ on the cross.

2. Fourth meeting of India-Mongolia Joint Committee held in New Delhi
i. India-Mongolia Joint Committee on Cooperation was held in New Delhi on 21 March 2013.
ii. The meeting was conducted to review the broad range of issues related to India-Mongolia relations.
iii. The Meeting also centered around continuation of joint military exercises, the proposed visit of an Indian business delegation to Mongolia in summer 2013 and the possibility of launching air services between India and Mongolia and the establishment of an India-Mongolia Joint School.

Highlights of the Meeting
i. The Indian side restated its support for Mongolia’s development processes and reaffirmed that it is modernizing the Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic College of Production and Art in Ulaanbaatar.
ii. The Indian side wants to set up a milk processing plant in Mongolia.
iii. An Implementation of the Line of Credit of 20 million US Dollars extended by India to Mongolia for setting up an India-Mongolia Joint Information Technology Education and Outsourcing Center in Ulaanbaatar was discussed.
iv. The Meeting also centered around continuation of joint military exercises, the proposed visit of an Indian business delegation to Mongolia in summer 2013 and the possibility of launching air services between India and Mongolia and the establishment of an India-Mongolia Joint School.

3. Biggest cyberattack slows down internet
i. A "bazooka" cyberattack described as the most powerful ever seen has slowed traffic on the internet, raising fresh concerns over online security.
ii. Internet users worldwide are having to endure slow connections after the biggest cyberattack in history.
iii. The attackers are throwing so much digital traffic at online networks that they have reportedly disrupted access to popular sites such as Netflix, the on-demand TV streaming service.
iv. There were fears that any worsening of the attack could affect web browsing and emails.
v. The attack is believed to have begun last week, when Spamhaus, an anti-spam organization, was hit by a wave of digital traffic that knocked its website offline.
vi. The body draws up lists of the servers used to send spam messages around the world. Email administrators use these lists to block spam.
vii. But last week one of the spammers irked by Spamhaus's work is believed to have launched the massive distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attack to bring down the anti-spam group.
viii. Pretending to be Spamhaus, the attackers sent a series of data requests to DNS servers, which help edirect web traffic around the world.
ix. However, the attackers began targeting their attacks so they would be concentrated.
x. This congestion was so heavy that it overwhelmed DNS routers, used to direct internet traffic.
xi. The congestion caused meant that connections across the internet slowed down.


4.Google launched Google Play Movies in India
i. Google added Google Play Movies features to its Google Play India Page which allows you to download or rent movies.
ii. Recently Google also has added Google Books, Google Nexus 7 Store to it’s Google Play in India.
iii. The Google play movies were simultaneously launched in India and Mexico.

Features
i. The outstanding feature of Google Play Movies is that it allows users to buy and stream popular films and television shows which can be downloaded in the high definition (HD) or standard versions, depending on compatibility of the device.
ii. The Google Movies play store has some great collection of English and Hindi and English movies like The amazing Spiderman, Ted, The Bourne legacy, Total Recall and Indian movies like Ek tha Tiger, Hum Tum, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
iii. One can also watch a movie on rent in Google Play Movies by paying an amount 100 rupees and can buy a movie for about200 Rupees. Rent and purchase amount of a movie differs from one to other.

NOTE: i. As per the Google’s terms and conditions, customers can also return or cancel their purchase anytime within seven days of purchase if they have not begun playback.
ii. On the other hand if one has ordered content that is defective, unavailable or does not perform as stated, he may request a refund at any time.

5. India and Liechtenstein Signed the Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA)
i. India and Liechtenstein signed the Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) on 28 March 2013 at Bern, Switzerland.
ii. The agreement was signed between Indian Ambassador in Switzerland and Ambassador of Liechtenstein in Switzerland.

Main Points of TIEA:
i. TIEA is based on international standard of transparency and exchange of information.
ii. A specific provision was incorporated in the agreement wherein it was decided that ownership and banking information shall be provided.
iii. The Agreement also includes specific provisions for protecting the confidentiality of the information obtained under the Agreement.
iv. It was decided that the information has to be kept secret or should be disclosed only to specific people and authorities, which are its oversight body or tax authorities.
v. The Agreement will be effective one month after the letter of notification. It is possible to exchange the information if it pertains to taxable periods beginning on or after 1 April 2013.
vi. TIEA additionally also facilitates exchange of documents or information created in or derived from a date preceding 1 April 2013.

6. 2nd National Photo Awards Conferred by the Speaker of Lok Sabha
i. The 2nd National Photo Awards for the year 2011-2012 were given away on 28 March 2013 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
ii. The awards were conferred by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar to eminent photojournalists.
iii. The most important Life-Time Achievement Awards were given away to some of the renowned photographers such as Pranlal Patel, T.S. Nagarajan and T.N.A. Perumal.

About the National Photo Awards
i. The National Photo Awards are given away by the Government of India to the eminent photojournalists in different categories.
ii. These awards are given away to the professional and amateur photographers.
iii. These were the second National Photo Awards, given away for the year 2011-2012.

7. Mexican weightlifter Soraya Jimenez dies at age 35
i. Mexican weightlifter Soraya Jimenez, a gold medalist at the Sydney games in 2000, died at age 35 on Thursday from a heart attack.
ii. Jimenez, who was battling various health problems and had just one lung, became a national hero as Mexico's first woman to win an Olympic gold medal.
iii. The athlete surprised many by retiring from the sport shortly after the Athens games in 2004.
iv. Jimenez won her gold medal in Sydney in the women's 58 kg weightlifting category after lifting a total of 225.5 kg (497 pounds).

8. Mathews to lead Warriors
i. Sri Lanka’s Test and ODI captain Angelo Mathews will lead Pune Warriors India (PWI) in IPL-VI.
ii. Mathews has been with Warriors for two years.
iii. A release from the franchise stated that South African Allan Donald will be the head coach, Praveen Amre, the assistant coach, and Rob Walters, the fitness trainer and fielding coach.

9. Boxer Ram Singh dismissed by Punjab Police in drug haul case
i. International boxer Ram Singh, sparring partner of Olympian Vijendra Singh on Thursday dismissed by Punjab police in connection with the recent recovery of 26 kg of heroin worth Rs 130 crore.
ii. Sub-Inspector Sarabjit Singh, who was close to a retired Senior Superintendent of Police, was also dismissed by the Punjab police in connection with the drug haul case.
iii. A team of Fatehgarh Sahib police raided the house of Sub-Inspector Sarabjit Singh on the intervening night of March 26-27 at Naya Gaon and claimed to recover 2.6 kg opium and one kg powder and packing material for drugs, a Punjab police spokesperson said.
iv. In addition, 10 empties of AK-47 and a 12-bore gun were recovered. No licence for the gun could be produced by those present in the house of Sarabjit.
