DAILY GK UPDATE: 24TH OCTOBER

1. Vijaya Dashami and Dusshera being celebrated with great pomp and gaiety; President, Vice President and Prime Minister greet the nation.
Vijayadashmi marking the culmination of the 10 day Dushera festivities was celebrated with gaiety and devotion. Effigies of demon king Ravana, his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhakaran crackled in fiery splendour marking the triumph of good over evil. Amid beating of drums, devotees, dancing frenziedly, also bid adieu to Goddess Durga as she returned to her celestial abode. President, Vice President and Prime Minister greeted the nation on the occasion.

2.RBI allowed domestic companies to make payments in SEZ in foreign currency
Reserve Bank of India has allowed domestic companies to make payments to units in special economic zones in foreign currency for the services delivered by them. Earlier, this facility was allowed only for payments made for goods. The move assumes significance as the tax-free zones are losing sheen because of withdrawal of some tax incentives. To attract investments, the Commerce Ministry is expected to soon announce some more incentives for Special Economic Zones to be set up in backward areas of the country.
NOTE:- RBI has also simplified the procedure for exporting goods and services by all Software Technology Parks of India to promote software exports. To ensure larger flow of credit to trade and industry in Jammu and Kashmir, RBI has extended credit relaxations to borrowers in the state until March 31, 2014.
3. Justice Yatindra Singh took oath as Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court

Justice Yatindra Singh appointed as the New Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt administered the oath to him.Bilaspur District of Chattisgarh.
He had  two books written under his name entitled 'Cyberlaws' and 'A Lawyer's World and Childhood dreams'.
4. Ek Thhi Kusum a Book by Prakash Pant Released
Ek Thhi Kusum a collection of short stories written by Prakash Pant, former State Assembly Speaker of Uttrakhand was released by Aziz Qureshi, Governor of Uttarakhand. 
NOTE:- The stories of the book are a collection of socio-economic tales of the far-flung areas of hill state. 
5. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda today named a new Justice Minister after the last one resigned  
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda today named a new Justice Minister after the last one resigned in the wake of an uproar over past links to organised crime. Makoto Taki, who was shuffled out of the post on October the 1st to make way for the now scandal-tainted Keishu Tanaka, has been put back in his old job, the government announced.
6. Centre approved 392 crore rupees for 29 minority concentration districts.
 Government has approved plans for 29 minority concentration districts in the country, involving an amount of over 392 crore rupees, during the 12th Five Year Plan. 
NOTE:- The plans were cleared by Empowered Committee for Multi-sectoral Development Programme in the Ministry of Minority Affairs at its 59th meeting held recently. Of the approved 29 district plans, 16 were from Uttar Pradesh, 9 from West Bengal and 4 from Jharkhand.
7. Formula One Indian Grand Prix kicks off this Friday at the Buddh International Circuit in NOIDA 
Formula One Indian Grand Prix kicks off this Friday at the Buddh International Circuit in NOIDA. Defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso will both be seen in action in the second edition of the Indian Grand Prix. 
NOTE:- Other top contenders include Mc Laren's Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher of Mercedes and Red Bull's Mark Webber.
8. India and Japan Focused On Expanding, Defence and Cyber Security Cooperation
India held its first 2+2 dialogue with Japan for enhancement of cooperation in the key areas that includes Maritime, Outer Space and Cyber Security at Tokyo, Japan. During the talks both the nations agreed to hold a dialogue on Cyber Security on 5 November 2012. 
9. Nokia India signed deal with FC Barcelona
Nokia India signed a deal with Futbol Club (FC) Barcelona making the company a regional partner of the club. It was a step taken Nokia India for capitalising on the huge fan following for European football in the country.
10. Iran to conduct first cyber drills
Iran says it will hold its first cyber drills in a bid to enhance its cyber capabilities and prevent cyber attacks. Head of Iran's Passive Defense Organization, Gholam-Reza Jalali said that Iran will hold the cyber drills in five or six major parts of the country. 
NOTE:- He made the remarks ahead of Iran's Passive Defense Week which begins on October 27. 
11.Tokyo University to sponsor Super 30 students
The highly acclaimed Super 30 educational programme, which trains students from economically backward sections for the IIT-JEE has entered into an agreement with University of Tokyo. The university will sponsor its students for study in Japan.
NOTE:- The pact was reached in Patna during a meeting between Anand Kumar, the founder of Super 30, and Yoshino Hiroshi, Director, The University of Tokyo.
12. Rajat Gupta handed two-year jail term
Rajat Gupta (63), the former Goldman Sachs Director and McKinsey and Company Managing Partner convicted of supplying confidential information to jailed hedge fund boss Raj Rajaratnam, received a two-year jail term from U.S. judge Jed Rakoff, even as one of the most spectacular insider-trading cases on Wall Street since the financial crisis of 2008 drew to a climax. He has also reportedly been ordered to pay a fine of $5 million.
13. Haryana Govt hikes DA to 72% for pensioners, family pensioners
Haryana Government revised the rates for Dearness Allowance relief for its pensioners and family pensioners from 65 to 72 per cent with effect from July 1, 2012.
NOTE:- Finance Minister H S Chattha said in Chandigarh today, the DA relief to pensioners and family pensioners would be admissible on the pattern of Union Government. He said, this will cost the State exchequer 8.35 crore rupee per month. The Minister said, to provide the relief from July, 2012, to February, 2013 an additional amount of 66.80 crore would be incurred, resulting in an additional annual burden of over Rs. 100 crore  for the State Government.
14. Maharashtra police registerd FIR against 26 top officials in the irrigation scam.
 In Aurangabad district of Maharashtra police have registered an FIR against 26 top Maharashtra officials, including a former chief secretary, in the irrigation scam. The case is related to alleged irregularities in the construction of 11 barrages by the Godavari Marathwada Irrigation Development Corporation in the Marathwada Region. Police say the first information report had been registered against the officials, following an order of the first class judicial magistrate. 
15. Head of Kerala-based Syro Malankara Catholic Church Major, Archbishop Baselios Mar Cleemis elevated to the status of Cardinal
Head of Kerala-based Syro Malankara Catholic Church Major, Archbishop Baselios Mar Cleemis was today elevated to the status of Cardinal by the Vatican. Pope BenedictXVI made the declaration elevating 53-year-old Cleemis as Cardinal. He is among the six new cardinals named from around the world to serve in an elite group of prelates who will one day select a new pope.
