DAILY GK UPDATE: 27TH NOVEMBER

1. Centre to set up country's 1st geothermal power project in Ladakh
Central Govt. is setting up its 1st geothermal power project in Ladakh J&K for promoting non-conventional energy.
NOTE:- The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said today. "We are working on that. Our first project on geothermal with a capacity of 3MW is coming up near Ladakh,". 
2. Marc Grossman, US Special Envoy to Af-Pak Resigned
US special envoy to Af-Pak (Afghanistan-Pakistan), Marc Grossman announced his resignation after being at the helm of diplomatic affairs in the volatile region for two years from 2010 to 2012. His resignation would come into effect from 14 December 2012. NOTE- NOTE:- Grossman would be succeeded by his Deputy Special US Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, David D Pearce.
3. Maldives cancelled its Biggest Foreign Investment Project with GMR Group
Maldives cancelled its biggest foreign investment project with Indian firm GMR Group to develop its international airport. The total value of the project was 511 million dollar. 
NOTE:- The deal with the GMR was signed during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration. Prior to this, a competitive bidding process was conducted by the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project was implemented through a joint venture company comprising GMR Infrastructure Limited and Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad.
4.India to Launch World’s Biggest Cash-to-the-Poor Program
India is planning to start giving cash directly to its poorest citizens starting in January, in a bid to reduce massive corruption that prevents subsidised goods and welfare benefits from reaching those who need them.
NOTE 1:- The project would affect at least 720 million people - a population almost the size of the whole of Europe - making this the world's biggest programme of giving money directly to the poor. 
NOTE 2:- The programme is open to families who live below or just above the government-set poverty line - which is Rs. 28.65(S$0.63) a day in urban areas and 22.42 rupees for rural areas. That definition of poverty, however, has come under criticism for being exceptionally low and the government said earlier this month that a new committee would be formed to reconsider the amount.
The government expects to transfer up to Rs. 40,000 a year to each poor household.
5. Microfinance India Summit 2012 held in New Delhi 
India’s nascent microfinance sector is showing signs of mild recovery after the SKS Microfinance-triggered meltdown, says a new report on the sector.
NOTE:- According to the State of the Sector Report 2012, brought out under the aegis of microfinance facilitation organisation Access Development Services, the loan amount disbursed by microfinance institutions, as well as the average loan ticket size, has shown signs of recovery in fiscal 2011-12.
6. 16 countries to participate in Kabaddi World Cup
16 countries will vie for top honours in the annual Kabaddi World Cup which will be held across the Punjab, starting December 1.
NOTE:- After the large-scale doping offences witnessed last year, the tournament, organised by the Punjab Government, this time will witness strict checks to make the event drug free.
7. HIV epidemic showing signs of reversal: WHO
With the HIV/AIDS epidemic showing signs of reversal globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and countries are now working towards zero new HIV infections, zero deaths from AIDS-related illnesses and zero discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
NOTE:- To achieve this goal, the WHO has emphasised the need for people to learn about their HIV status, and for greater effort to reach and support young people and men who have sex with men, sex workers, people who inject drugs, migrants and others who are most vulnerable to the disease. December 1 is observed as World AIDS Day annually the world over.
8. Kamal Nath and leading Indian industrialist Anand Mahindra to be honoured by a business leadership forum for Asia
Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath and leading Indian industrialist Anand Mahindra were among a host of business leaders and policy makers from the Asian continent honoured by a business leadership forum for Asia in the UAE. 
NOTE:- While Mr. Kamal Nath was awarded the Asian Business Leadership Forum ABLF Statesman Award, the Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra Group was honoured with the ABLF Business Courage Award.
9. India's first indigenously created low-cost tablet Aakash will be showcased at the United Nations headquarters
India's first indigenously created low-cost tablet Aakash will be showcased at the United Nations headquarters. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will launch the tablet at the invitation of the Permanent Mission of India to celebrate India's presidency of the UN Security Council through November.
NOTE:-India will be presenting a tablet to the representative from each country at the General Assembly .
10. Pakistan  test fired "Hatf V Ghauri" a nuclear-capable ballistic missile 
Pakistan  test fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a range of 1,300 kilometers. The military described the Hatf V Ghauri missile as a liquid fuel missile, which can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads. 
NOTE:- It was Pakistan's eighth missile test so far this year and comes two months after its last test of a Hatf-VII with a range of 700 kilometers.
11. 8 day long International Pushkar Fair concluded today in Rajasthan
The 8 day long International Pushkar Fair concluded with Kartika Purnima Snan at Holy Pushkar Sarovar.
