DAILY GK UPDATE: 17TH DECEMBER

1. Shahrukh Khan honoured with BrandLaureate Legendary Award in Malaysia
47 Years old Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan awarded with the prestigious BrandLaureate Legendary Award in Malaysia.
NOTE:- The award was given by the Malaysia-based Asia Pacific Brands Foundation for his contributions to the Bollywood film industry and as India's foremost brand ambassador.
2. Union Government of India lowered the Growth Projection for Current Fiscal to 5.7 Percent

Union Government of India today lowered down the growth projection for the current financial year 2012-13 from 7.6 percent that was estimated earlier to 5.7-5.9 percent. It also pitched for the supportive monetary and fiscal policies for improving the confidence of the investors. 
NOTE:- The projection was showcased in the Mid-Year Economic Analysis tabled in Indian Parliament.
3. Government of Bihar to hold Bandi Drabar in Jail for redressal of Complaints by Prisoners
Government of Bihar in the month of December announced that that it is going to hold bandi darbars in jails across the state for on-the-spot resolution of complaints by jail inmates related to food, health and other civic facilities.
NOTE:- As Per the new jail manual 2012, notified by the state government, the darbars is supposed to be held once in two months by the concerned district magistrates.
4. Junior World TT Championship: China Claimed All Titles
China got the clean sweep of titles at Volkswagen 2012 World Junior Table Tennis Championship after it won girls as well as boys trophies. 
NOTE:- In the second week of December 2012, China had won girls’ and boys’ team titles. 
5. Central Zoo Authority of India Approved Exchanging White Tigress against Puma Pair from Russia
Central Zoo Authority of India approved exchanging white tigress from the Delhi Zoo against a pair of puma, which is also called cougar, panther or mountain lion, from the Krasnoyarks Park of flora and fauna, Roev Ruchey in Russia. 
NOTE:- This pair of puma would arrive soon from Russia. This pair would be among other foreign species such as South American jaguars as well as grey kangaroos which are nestled at National Zoological Park, New Delhi.
6. Union Government of India Extended ban on ULFA and NDFB
Union home ministry in Month of December extended the ban on United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) under the Unlawful Prevention Act.
NOTE:- The home ministry in a gazette notification announced that all the factions of the ULFA and the NDFB are banned under Section three of the Unlawful Prevention Act.
7. RS passes bill for reservation in promotion for SCs and STs in govt. jobs.
Rajya Sabha has passed the Constitution (117th Amendment) Bill, 2012 providing for reservation in promotions to SCs and STs in government jobs. 206 members voted in favour while 10 against it.
NOTE:- The Bill required majority of the total members of the House and two-third majority of the members present and voting.

8. India retain No.5 spot in ICC Test rankings
Despite losing to England 1-2 in the home Test series, India retained their number five position as per the latest ICC Test Championship rankings issued Dubai today.
India, however, dropped a ratings point to 105, and are now four-points behind arch-rival Pakistan who are placed at the fourth position.
9. WB govt.to start pre-primary education in all schools
West Bengal Government is due to start pre-primary education in all Government and Government-aided Schools.
NOTE:- State Education Minister Mr. Bratya Basu said that, additional class rooms for pre-primary teachings and appointment of pre-primary teachers are to be undertaken soon. He said that, the admission of students in these sections will be through lotteries. The education minister said that although admissions to the primary stage is going to be at 6 plus age of students, those who pass pre-primary before 6 syears of age will not be debared from admition to class one.
10. WHO’s clearance for India’s vaccine regulatory system
World Health Organization team today cleared India's vaccine regulatory system for maintaining international standards. This has paved the way for easy export of vaccines produced in the country.
NOTE:- India's Rs 19,000-crore vaccine industry accounts for exports worth 13 billion US dollars to 150 countries across the world. The latest certification means all the 12 Indian vaccine makers can now apply for WHO pre-qualification and thus improve the chances of exporting their products to all over the world.
11. Sharad Pawar releases book “For the Grains” written by KV Thomas
Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today released a book titled 'For the Grains' at a function in New Delhi. The book written by Food Minister K V Thomas is a compilation of 37 speeches delivered by him in recent years.
NOTE:- The Book covers a wide range of issues including agriculture, food security, climate change, ayurveda, research and education in the country. 
12. Tamil Version of the Book "Still Counting the Dead" authored by Frances Harrison Released


Tamil version of the book, Still Counting the Dead- Survivors of Sri Lanka's Hidden War authored by Frances Harrison was released on 15 December 2012. The first copy of the translated work was received by noted art critic and writer Sadanand Menon. 
NOTE:- This book reveals the unprecedented killings in the last phase of civil war-also called as Eelam War in Sri Lanka in the year 2009.
