1.Chief Justice of India Inaugurated First Fast-Track Court in Delhi for Hearing Rape Cases:
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Altamas Kabir inaugurated the first fast-track court in Delhi on 2 January 2013 for dealing with the crimes against females. The first fast-track court is one among other four fast-track courts which would deal with the cases of crime against the women. This court is set up in the Saket Court Complex and the first case to be heard here is that of the Delhi gangrape which took place on 16 December 2012.
Other fast track courts would function from 3 January 2013 at Rohini, Tis Hazari and Dwarka in New Delhi.

NOTE: The Supreme Court declined to hear a plea for disqualification of MPs and MLAs charge sheeted for crime against women but agreed to go into issues of fast track trial of rape cases and implementation of laws for safety of women.
Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra which was hearing two PILs filed after the December 16 gangrape incident, said it can only give notice to the government on limited issues as some of the prayers made in the petitions were beyond its jurisdiction.
"What is our power on MPs and MLAs. Obviously, such a sweeping relief can't be sought," the bench said referring to the prayer made for a direction for suspension of MPs and MLAs who have been charge-sheeted for crime against women. The bench also asked the government to apprise it about the terms and references of the Justice J S Verma committee which was set up to review and strengthen the existing law on rape and offences against women.
3.Govt. launches CCTNS pilot project:
The CCTNS would be a comprehensive database for crimes and criminals.

An ambitious project to create a comprehensive and integrated system for effective policing and sharing data of crimes and criminals among 14,000 police stations across the country was formally launched in New Delhi today. The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) aims at creation of a nation-wide networking infrastructure for evolution of IT-enabled sophisticated tracking system around 'investigation of crime and detection of criminals'. Home Secretary R K Singh said the CCTNS would be a comprehensive database for crimes and criminals, and it would be easier for the law enforcement agencies to track down a criminal moving from one place to another.

NOTE: Urjit Patel was appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on 3 January 2013. Urjit Patel succeeds Subir Gokarn, who handled Monetary Policy in RBI. The three-year term of Subir Gokarn terminated in November 2012 but he was given an extension which ended finally on 31 December 2012.

NOTE: Iran said that it has agreed to hold talks with six major powers over its controversial nuclear program in January. Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili confirmed this while talking to reporters in New Delhi. Jalili is the second top Iranian nuclear negotiator to visit India over a month period.
Iran denies the charges and says that its program is meant only for civilian energy purposes. Three rounds of talks since last April between Iran and six major world powers - the United States, Russia, France, Britain, Germany and China has failed to achieve a breakthrough.

11.Batsmen disappointed again, says MS Dhoni:
