DAILY GK UPDATE 6th JUNE

1.    Hradecka, Cermak win French Open mixed doubles

i. Czech Republic pair Frantisek Cermak and Lucie Hradecka won the French Open mixed doubles title by defeating Daniel Nestor of Canada and Kristina Mladenovic of France 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 on Thursday

ii. In the super tiebreaker, the Czechs won four straight points to lead 9-5 and clinched victory when Mladenovic netted a backhand volley.

iii. It was the second Grand Slam title for Hradecka, who also won the 2011 women’s doubles title, and the first for Cermak.

2.    Highest Krishi Vigyan Kendra to be set up at J&K’s Nyoma

i. Country's highest Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) will be set up at Nyoma, Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir at a height of about 14 thousand feet.

ii. The Nyoma KVK is likely to bring about substantial change in the lives of people of nearby areas who are mostly nomads and rear pashmina goats

iii. The KVK will seek to improve fodder production, provide health care to the roaming animals, introduce vegetable production under protected environment and impart training to women on animal care.

3.    Susan Appointed as the National Security Adviser to Obama 

i. Susan Elizabeth Rice, the American ambassador to the United Nations was appointed as the National Security Adviser of US President Barack Obama

ii. She replaced Tom Donilon. 

iii. She is an American diplomat and was as of now, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.

iv. She served as staff of National Security Council and as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs during the second term of President Bill Clinton.

v.  Susan Elizabeth Rice received one of the Glamour Magazine Women of the Year Awards in the year 2009.

4.    India-Myanmar set Three Billion Dollar Trade 

i. India and Myanmar set three billion dollar trade target by 2015 during the meeting of India’s energy minister Anand Sharma with his Myanmar counterpart U Than Htay in New Delhi held on 6 June 20313.

ii. India conveyed the interest of Indian banks in setting up their branches in Myanmar. 

iii. It also conveyed India’s interest in deepening cooperation in the fields of energy, oil and natural gas.

iv. Myanmar expressed keen interest in building linkages with the textiles sector of India.

v.  It has immense potential for Myanmar. It also sought India’s help in developing a full value chain for silk production in her country

NOTE: Myanmar is India’s important neighbor and the relations between the two countries have broadened and deepened in the last two years. India is ready to extend all necessary assistance to Myanmar in its development efforts.

5.    First all-women police station opens in Arunachal

i. The first all-women police station in Arunachal Pradesh has started functioning to specifically deal with crimes against women.

ii. The plan to set up the maiden all-women police station was mooted by the state government days after the Delhi gang-rape incident and the proposal was approved by the state cabinet on February 

iii. The cabinet had also approved for creation of separate cells in all 17 district headquarters as well as at the police headquarters in Itanagar to tackle crimes against women.

iv. With the opening of the all-women police station on Tuesday, the state government has sent a clear message to ensure better safety and security to women

6.    Kundra admitted to betting: Delhi Police

i. Rajasthan Royals' owner Raj Kundra has admitted to indulging in betting and placed bets on his own team, Delhi Police claimed on Thursday 

ii. Kundra, a British national, was questioned for 11 hours on Wednesday, after cricketer Sidharth Trivedi told police that Kundra's business partner-friend Umesh Goenka used to ask for information regarding team formation and pitches.

iii. Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said, "He has admitted to betting. He used to bet on his own team. We have also come to know that he has lost a lot of money in betting. He used to bet through Goenka, who is also a bookie

NOTE: i. Kundra is the second IPL team owner after Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan who is in the dock for alleged betting.

ii. If the charges against the owners are proved, BCCI can suspend the teams from the IPL.

7.    Award-winning films to be screened at National Film Festival in Delhi

i. Fifty seven films that won national awards in 2012 will be screened for public at the National Film Festival that is set to begin in Delhi from Thursday. 

ii. The festival is being organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

iii. Officials said that 38 Feature Films and 19 Non-Feature Films will be screening during the 11 days festival.

iv. As a mark of respect to ace director Rituparno Ghosh, whose recent death at an early age shocked the film fraternity, the festival will open with his award winning Bengali movie 'Chitrangada'.

v. Other award winning feature films which will be screening during the festival are Delhi Safari, Dekh Indian Circus, Chittagong, OMG Oh My God, Ishaqzaade, Bharath Stores, Paradesi, Gangs of Wasseypur, Filmistaan, Vicky Donor and Kahaani which are all hindi movies.
