1. 'Oxford of the East' turns 125
Allahabad University, the fourth-oldest university in the country, turned 125 today. The occasion was marked by a cultural event and the showcasing of a 125 feet-long painting canvas.
NOTE:- The Central University, once known as the “Oxford of the East,” was established on September 23, 1887. However, Viceroy of India Lord Northbrook, on December 9, 1873 laid the foundation stone of the Muir Central College, named after Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of the United Provinces. With the promulgation of the ‘Allahabad University Act of 1921,’ the Muir Central College merged with the university.
2. SBI cuts prime lending rate by 0.25 per cent
The State Bank of India, SBI has announced a reduction in lending rates by 0.25 per cent for those who availed loans before July 2010. The bank's new benchmark prime lending rate, BPLR has been set at 14.50 per cent. The new rate will be effective from September 27.
3. Karnataka HC stays 2yrs ban on Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna
Karnataka High Court has stayed the ban on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna imposed by the All India Tennnis Association. Justice Mohan Shanthanagoudar pronounced the interim stay on the ban after hearing the petition filed by both the players. The court has also sent a notice to AITA about the stay order, and said that they can reply to the same.
4. Deepika Kumari wins silver in rescure event at World Archery
Indian archer Deepika Kumari has won silver medal in recurve event at World Archery in Tokyo. In the final today, Deepika lost to World No.1 Ki Bo-Bae of Korea by 4-6. She hit 7 and missed a chance to win the title.
5. India to relax fabric sourcing norm from Sri Lanka
India has accepted Sri Lanka's request for relaxation of fabric sourcing for readymade garments export to India. Once the notification by the Government of India is issued, Sri Lanka will be able to export 8 million pieces of readymade garments to India at zero duty under India- Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA). As per the existing arrangement under ISFTA, India has granted two sets of apparel quotas at zero duty to Sri Lanka.
5. India,S Africa confident of achieving USD 15 billion bilateral trade
India and South Africa have exuded confidence of achieving the 15 billion US dollar bi-lateral trade this current year itself ahead of the set target in 2014. The announcement follows Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma's meeting with his counterpart Rob Davies during his two-day visit to South Africa starting from Friday.

Afghanistan and China have expressed their desire to expand relations between the two countries in various fields. A high ranking Chinese delegation led by Communist Party polit bureau member Zhou Yongkang arrived on a brief visit to Kabul yesterday and met Afghan President Hamid Karzai and signed a number of agreements.
7. Sudan, South Sudan Presidents met in Ethiopia today
Presidents of Sudan and South Sudan met in Ethiopia today, to try to resolve differences that brought the two nations to the brink of war earlier this year. Key issues include border demarcation and how to share oil revenues. Earlier, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for "co-operation and mutual development", and the US said Sudan should accept an African Union border plan already agreed by South Sudan.

9. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and 6 other states to get more funds for improving literacy rate under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and six other states with literacy levels below the national average will get enhanced Central share under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. The Planning Commission has given its approval to a proposal to this effect. According to HRD Ministry officials, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will also be included along with the northeastern states. The proposal has to be vetted by the National Development Council before coming into effect.
10. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), has proposed to expand the reach of insurance cover to Below Poverty Line (BPL)
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA), has proposed to expand the reach of insurance cover to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the next five years. In its draft proposal published on IRDA's website, the Insurance regulator has said that each insurer shall prescribe the target in proportion to their market share. It said that these schemes or products should be in addition to the government schemes, which provide insurance cover at concessional rates.
