DAILY GK UPDATE: 15TH OCTOBER 2012

1. International Day of Rural Women observed today across the globe
International Day of Rural Women  being observed today across the globe.
NOTE:- The day recognizes the role of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.  
2. Today is Mahalaya, the beginning of Devi Paksha
Today is Mahalaya, the beginning of Devi Paksha, the  greatest festival of Bengalees, Durga Pooja. 
NOTE:- Mahalaya marks the end of Pitra Paksha and beginning of Devi Paksha. It is believed that Maa Durga begins her journey to the earth on Devi Paksha. 
On this day, people offer prayers betterly known as Tarpan to their ancestors.
3. Roth and Shapley of US won the 2012 Nobel Prize for Economics
The US duo Alvin Roth and Lloyd Shapley have won the Nobel Prize for Economics this year for the theory of "stable allocations and the practice of market design".
4. Ali Zidan elected as the New Prime Minister of Libya


Libya's National Congress today elected Ali Zidan as the new Prime Minister.  
NOTE:- Mr Zidan, an independent, won 93 votes, a majority among those present. He beat a candidate favoured by the Justice and Construction party which is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.
5. India, Russia agreed to accelerate economic ties
India and Russia today decided to accelerate their economic ties and agreed to factor in New Delhi's liability concerns in their techno-commercial negotiations for units III and IV of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
6. Scottish independence referendum agreed for 2014
British Prime Minister David Cameron and Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond signed an agreement today to hold a referendum in 2014 on Scottish independence. 
NOTE:- The referendum agreement has been signed following talks in Edinburgh between Cameron and Salmond, who leads the pro-independence Scottish National Party. 
7. Ex Cambodia King Sihanouk passed away in China
Former King of Cambodia Norodom Sihanouk passed away in China, where he had been receiving medical treatment. He was 89 years old. 
NOTE:- Norodom Sihanouk played a crucial role in the life of Cambodia for more than 60 years. 
8. SC refuses to stay Centre's FDI policy in retail sector
Supreme Court today refused to stay the Centre's FDI policy in retail sector. 
The Apex Court asked RBI to amend FEMA regulations within two weeks to allow implementation of FDI in this sector.
9. Inflation rises to 7.81 per cent in September, from 7.55 percent in August.
Inflation rose to its highest level this fiscal at 7.81 per cent in September as prices of wheat, cereals and diesel soared. Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 7.55 per cent in August. 
10.Australia is likely to enter into civil nuclear cooperation with India. 
Australia is likely to enter into civil nuclear cooperation with India. It is expected to offer the sale of uranium to India during Prime Minister Julia Gillard's 3-day visit to the country beginning this evening. 
NOTE:- Despite supporting the move by the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) in 2008 to allow India to conduct nuclear commerce, Australia continued to deny uranium to India for not having signed the NPT. Now, it is likely to enter into civil nuclear cooperation with India. The core of this cooperation is the safeguards agreement that will allow Australia to bypass opposition from various groups, which are opposing the Labour government's decision to overturn the ban on uranium sale to India.
11. International Telecom Union Conference, ITU -2012 held in Dubai 
The global leaders and ICT experts have expressed concern at the growing threat to the internet world. Cyber security is in focus at the International Telecom Union Conference, ITU -2012 in Dubai. 
Telecom and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal has emphasised the need to protect the security of the networks as per globally accepted standards.
12. 13th round of Home Secretary level talks between India and Bangladesh will begin tomorrow in Dhaka
Home Secretary Mr. R.K. Singh arrived in Dhaka this morning to participate in the 13th round of Home Secretary level talks between India and Bangladesh. He is leading a 10-member Indian delegation to hold talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart CQK Mustaq Ahmed. 
14. Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek won the Shanghai Masters men's Doubles Title.  
Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek won the ATP Shanghai Masters men's Doubles Tennis Title at Shanghai, China. The fourth seeded Indo-Czech pair yesterday defeated the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna 6-7, 6-3, 10-5, in the final, to lift the title.
NOTE:- In Men's singles, Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray  to win the Shanghai Masters Tennis Title. 
15. Government to conduct random audit to check corruption in MGNREGA Projects. 
Expressing concern over complaints of corruption in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MGNREGA) projects, Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh  said that the government has decided to conduct audit of ten per cent of villages on a random basis every year. 
NOTE:- The Minister said the Comptroller and Auditor General was checking the MGNREGA accounts in various states and is likely to prepare a state-wise report by December.
16. Villages across the country to be connected through Broad Band by the 2013.
Telecom and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal today while addressing, the International Telecom Union Conference, ITU-2012 in Dubai said, the government is working to ensure accessible and affordable modes of energy and communication for all in this regard. 
He also informed that the Villages across the country will be connected through the Broad Band by 2013 and the government is investing more than 4 billion dollars through Bharat Broadband to lay the fibre optic network for this purpose. The Telecom Minister also said that 4G applications are expected to be in place on a wider scale in the country by 2014.
