DAILY GK UPDATE: 18TH OCTOBER

1. Ravi Narain Elected New Chairman of Working Committee of World Federation Exchanges
National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) chief and Managing Director Ravi Narain elected as New Chairman of the working committee of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE). He is also the chairman of the National Securities Clearing Corporation and a board member of the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange.
The appointment of Ravi Narain came in the annual meeting of World Federation Exchange which also elected Deutsche Borse AG's Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andreas Preuss as its chairman, while Thomas A Kloet, CEO of TMX Group, as the  vice-chairman of the working committee.
NOTE:- The World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) is an international organization for securities and derivative markets such as stock exchanges. It comprises of Group of more than 50 Bourses or Stock Exchanges.
2.Cabinet Committee on security approves Rs 8,000 cr to procure Brahmos missiles
Cabinet Committee on security today approved proposals worth over Rs, 8,000 crore for procuring around 10,000 'Invar' missiles from Russia for the Army's T-90 tanks and over 200 air-launched versions of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for the IAF. 
NOTE:- IAF proposal worth over Rs. 6,000 crore to buy BrahMos missiles for the IAF involves sanctioning of funds for the integration and testing of the BrahMos missile on Russian-origin Su-30MKI of the IAF. The first test of the air-launched version of the supersonic cruise missile, developed jointly by India and Russia, is to be conducted by December-end.
3. Govt approved Rs 4000 cr joint action plan for tackling Japanese Encephalitis
Union Cabinet today approved over Rs. 4000 crore action plan for the prevention and control of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome. 
NOTE:- The proposal of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the implementation of the intervention activities recommended by the Group of Ministers for prevention and control of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome will be implemented in 60 priority districts for a period of 5 years begining this year.
4. Railway employees to get 78 days of productivity linked bonus
Union Cabinet today approved the proposal for payment of Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB), equivalent to 78 days wages, for all eligible non-gazetted railway employees for the financial year 2011-2012.
NOTE:- The financial implication has been estimated to be Rs.1021.56 crore. The wage calculation ceiling prescribed for payment of PLB to the eligible non-gazetted railway employees is Rs. 3500 per month.
5. Uttar Pradesh Government Approved IT Policy 2012
State cabinet of Uttar Pradesh Government in Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav approved the IT Policy 2012. The IT policy 2012 basically meant for developing Lucknow and Agra as IT hub, and to establish both IT park and IT city.
NOTE:- With the approval of IT Policy 2012, the IT and Electronics Department got 150 acres of land from the Animal Husbandry Department free of cost to develop IT city. 
Uttar Pradesh Government also approved the second phase of Ghaziabad metro rail from Dilshad Garden, New Delhi, to the bus stand in Ghaziabad.
6. UP Govt. doubled the prize money for Yash Bharti Award
UP State Cabinet came up with approval to the proposal of doubling the prize money for Yash Bharti Award which is given to singers, Filmstars, Sportpersons, and Journalists etc. The award is now made to 11 lakh Rupees from earlier 5 lakh rupees.
NOTE:- The Cabinet in its meeting had also approved 'Janeshwar Misra handloom Award Scheme' with the prize money of Rs. 25000 . The scheme is aimed to promote handloom weavers and acknowledge their works
7. Government sets up task force  to work on land reform issues.
Government has constituted a task force, chaired by Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh and co-chaired by Tribal Affairs Minister Kishore Chandra Deo to work on land reform issues. The setting up of the task force is  part of an agreement signed last week between the Government and Jan Satyagrah activists, who have been fighting for a National Land Reforms Policy. 
8. India and Australia have agreed to expand co-operation in Security and Defence including the fight against terrorism. 
India and Australia have agreed to expand co-operation in Security and Defence including the fight against terrorism. They also agreed to begin negotiations for an agreement on Civil Nuclear Energy Co-operation which will precede actual cooperation. Both the countries also signed four agreements in the field of space science technology and education, co-operation in student mobility and welfare, skill development and textiles. 
9. Government to raise import duty on white sugar to twenty per cent to check it from flooding domestic market.
Centre is considering raise a import duty on white sugar to 20 per cent to check it from flooding the domestic market. Food Minister K V Thomas said a decision in this regard would be taken soon. He informed that a cabinet note will be moved in the next 15 days after consultation with the concerned ministries. Mr Thomas added, the government is also looking at scrapping the import duty on raw sugar. He said, it is necessary as imported sweetener would be refined in the domestic market, generating employment.
NOTE:-  At present, import duty on white sugar as well as raw sugar is at 10 per cent each.
10. Asia Co-operation Dialogue Summit held in Kuwait
Asia Co-operation Dialogue Summit has given a call for stronger co-operation among member nations and to work for the improvement of living conditions.Leaders from 32 countries pledged to focus on key areas to fulfill the aspirations of the people. These include sustainable energy and development, economic growth, food security, trade and commerce, health care, climate change and co-operation in financial and education sectors. 
NOTE:- Afghanistan has become a new member of the ACD while Iraq said it was looking forward to being a partner with the organization. The leaders agreed to pursue the 2 billion dollar fund to help development in poor non Arab Asian countries. 
The Asian Co-operation Dialogue was founded in 2002 to strengthen co-operation among the regional blocks- GCC,SAARC and ASEAN in the Asian continent. 
Prominent members include India, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
11. Tea Board of India Signed a joint Communique with European tea Committee
It was agreed with signing of communique that both the oraganisation will cooperate and work together in distributing information about the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) registration and its implications in Germany and other tea consuming countries within the European Union.
NOTE:- Now with the implementation of PGI, tea produced only in Darjeeling can be labelled and sold as Darjeeling Tea within the territory of European Union.
12. Centre of Science and Environment and HSBC Bank came Together to Impart Environment Training
Centre of Science and Environment (CSE) announced Partnership with Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corpoartion Ltd (HSBC) to set up modern Environment Training Institute in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
NOTE:- The Institute that will set up will be offering short and long term courses on Environmental governance for regulators and decision makers.
13. IOC signed MoU with Korea Gas Corporation to Jointly explore and produce Gas
State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) signed an MoU with Korea Gas Corporation, (Kogas), to jointly explore and produce oil and gas at the global level.
NOTE:- The MoU also provides for developing natural gas infrastructure projects and liquified natural gas or LNG sourcing. It was signed at the Petrotech 2012 conference in New Delhi.
14. Race for Survival, World Marathon Challenge was organised to Raise Issue of Malnutrition 
World Marathon Challenge–Race for Survival was organised at Laxman Public School in Delhi to raise the issue of malnutrition. 100 children from four schools of Delhi participated in the race to raise concerns of government towards malnutrition urging it to work in the direction of malnutrition eradication.
The marathon was organised by an International Organisation, Save the Children that highlighted the major issue about the death of more than 1.65 million children dying in India due to the cause of malnutrition that includes diarrhoea and pneumonia even before attaining the age of five. 
NOTE:- The children who ran in the race presented a letter to the Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit urging her to take children survival and nutrition at the top of government agenda. 
15. Union Power Ministry gave its Nod to Implement Islanding Scheme in Delhi
Union Power Minister Veerapa Moily  announced the implementation of Islanding Scheme for Delhi by January 2013 to protect it from massive disruptions caused due to grid failures in power supply. The scheme of Delhi is different to that of the existing ones in cities like Mumbai and Kolkata because the transmission lines of different states is routed through Delhi.
