On the occassion, Union Govt. announced to set up 12 new Greenfield airports across the country to accommodate growing air traffic. Announcing this at the 49th Directors General of Civil Aviation Conference in New Delhi today, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said, new airport facilities are also ready for commissioning in Chennai and Kolkata very soon.
2. John Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka selected for Nobel Prize for Medicine2012
British scientist John Gurdon, who along with a Japanese physician won this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine for the 'reprogramming' of the fate of cells, was once told by his school teacher that his passion for science would be a "sheer waste of time".
3. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Re-Elected for fourth term
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has been re-elected for the fourth term. Mr Chavez defeated opposition leader Henrique Capriles. Mr Chavez garnered 54.42 per cent of the vote while his rival bagged 44 per cent votes.
4. World Bank lowered its growth forecast for China
World Bank has lowered its growth forecast for China, citing weak demand for its exports and lower investment growth.
NOTE:- The bank said it expects China's economy to grow by 7.7 per cent this year, down from its projection of 8.2 per cent in May. China's exports have been hurt by economic problems in the Eurozone and the US, two of its biggest markets.
5. Bihar observed 5th October as Dolphin Day
Bihar on 5 October 2012 observed Dolphin Day. This day was observed in wake of spreading awareness for conservation of the Gangetic Dolphins the rare and endangered species that is found only in the Gangetic River System and its Tributaries.
6. Sufi Singer Abida Parveen Got Lifetime Achievement Award
Pakistani Sufi legend Abida Parveen was honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Kaladharmi Begum Akhtar Academy of Ghazal in New Delhi.
NOTE:- 58 years old Abida Parveen is the famous Pakistani singer of Sindhi descent and one of the foremost exponents of Sufi music. She was born in a musical family and had received initial training from her father Ustaad Ghulam Haider
7. West Indies won the ICC World Twenty20 Tournament
West Indies won the finals of ICC World Twenty20 Championship after defeating the Sri Lankan team by 36 runs at R. Premadasa Stadium. West Indies batting first in the match scored 137 runs for six wickets down. In response to the target, the Lankan team finished off at a score of 101 runs allowing West Indies to win the tournament.
8. Australia Retained Women T-20 World Cup Title
Australian Women Cricket team defeated England by four runs to retain the Women T-20 World Cup Title. It is Australia’s second win in women T-20 World cup. Before this Australia had won T-20 World Cup in 2010.
9. Delhi University and DRDO Collaborated for Taking up Scientific Projects
Delhi University and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) agreed for collaboration of undertaking scientific projects in which both will be benefitted.
Although, the memorandum of understanding (MoU)with the DRDO was signed a few months back but it is now being operationalise
10. Former UP Governor and Freedom Fighter Satyanarayan Reddy Passed Away
Former Governor of UP and Odisha and a renowned freedom fighter B Satyanarayan Reddy died on 7 October 2012 folowing age-related illness in a private Hospital in Hyderabad.
He was 86 years old.
11. Post Card Campaign in Maharashtra for Making State Liquor Free
Tribal women from Maharashtra's Chandrapur district have sent 80,000 postcards to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan asking to make the district liquor-free.
NOTE:- Hundreds of women from rural parts led by president of Shramik Elgar- Paromita Goswami and Dr Rani Bang took out protest rally in town and after the rally the participating women posted 80,000 letters to CM Prithviraj Chavan.
The demand to ban liquor is being made since 2010 in Maharashtra.
12. Kuwait's Parliament was dissolved in for the Sixth Time in Five Year
Kuwait's Ruler Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah dissolved the parliament clearing the decks for yet other parliamentary elections in the country. It is for the sixth time in five years that parliament has been dissolved in Kuwait. The opposition had been demanding dissolution of the National Assembly.
