1. President, Vice President, PM greet nation on Diwali
President and Vice President have greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali.
In his message, the President Pranab Mukherjee has said, Diwali is a time for festivity and happiness cutting across all faiths and cultures. It is an occasion to share joy with those who are needy and deprived. Mr. Mukherjee urged people to try and celebrate a pollution free Diwali.
2. Public Service Broadcasting Day being observed today.
Public Service Broadcasting Day is being observed today in the country. This day is observed on November 12 every year to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to All India Radio studio at the Broadcasting House in New Delhi.
NOTE:- It was on this day in 1947, that Gandhiji spoke on radio to the refugees from Pakistan, stationed at a camp in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
3. 2G auction: Govt receives bids over Rs 9,280 crore on Day 1
In response to the online auction for 2G telecom spectrum,the government received bids worth about Rs. 9,280 crore at the end of five rounds on Day 1.
NOTE 1:- Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar said, in 176 blocks of spectrum in 22 telecommunications zones in the country that were put on auction, bids were received only for 98. Telecom Secretary said, the spectrum reserve price exceeded in UP (West) and UP (East) circles. Gujarat and Bihar received bids for all 8 blocks (of 1.25 MhZ each) that were put for auction. The government had set a bid starting price of 14,000 crore rupees for 5 megahertz of GSM airwave space in all the zones.
NOTE 2:-The government had hoped to raise about 40,000 crore rupees in revenue. Two key circles-Delhi and Mumbai-did not receive any bids on the first day.
At the end of the fifth round there had been bids for 98 blocks across 18 circles of the total 176 blocks in 22 circles that were up for grabs.
3. South Africa Ranked 1st in latest ICC test rankings
South Africa leads the International Cricket Council, ICC test rankings table followed by England and Australia. India is placed fifth behind Pakistan.
NOTE:- Srilanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is the number one among the batsmen while Dale Steyn leads the pack of bowlers. None of the Indian players figure in top ten in test cricket ratings. The latest ICC rankings were released in Dubai today.

Indian Industry today Expressing disappointment over poor show by industrial production in September. Indian Industry pressed for rate cut by the RBI to boost production and further revive the economic growth.
5. India reaffirms vision of strong, stable Afghanistan
India has reaffirmed its commitment towards a stable, strong, united and prosperous Afghanistan. Both the countries also decided to intensify their cooperation, especially in the economic sector as 4 pacts were signed, including one on cooperation in development of coal and mineral resources and Indian aid for implementation of small development projects in Afghanistan.
NOTE:- Addressing a joint press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in New Delhi Prime Minister
reiterated India's commitment to support Afghanistan in its development efforts. He said the development assistance commitment to Afghanistan currently stands at approximately 2 billion dollars.
6. Exports dip 1.63% to $23.2 billion in Oct
India's exports in October contracted 1.63 per cent year-on-year, for the sixth month in a row, to 23.2 billion US Dollars, mainly due to demand slowdown in the US and European markets. Exports in October 2011 stood at 23.6 billion Dollars.
NOTE:- However, imports grew by 7.37 per cent to 44.2 billion US Dollars in October, leaving a trade deficit of 20.96 billion Dollars.
7. Pinki Pramanik is male :medical report
Asian Games gold medal winner woman athlete Pinki Pramanik has been found to be a male after a medical test done by a board of doctors at the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata.
NOTE:- A medical report submitted today by the police in a court at Barasat in West Bengal confirms this. Based on the report, police filed a charge sheet against Pinki, now on bail, charging the athlete with rape and cheating as well as charges of holding out threats.
8. Majlis Ethehadul Muslimeen (MIM) today withdrew its support to the UPA Government
The Majlis Ethehadul Muslimeen (MIM) today withdrew its support to the UPA Government at the centre and Kiran Kumar Reddy’s Government in Andhra Pradesh.
NOTE:- MIM President and Hyderabad Lok Sabha member Asaduddin Owaisi announced the withdrawal of support to both the Governments at a press conference in Hyderabad today. Owaisi said that an emergency meeting of the party Polit Bureau held in Hyderabad this morning decided to pull out of the UPA and a letter to this effect has been faxed to the President of India. He also said a similar letter will also be handed over to Governor of Andhra Pradesh.
9. Inflation moved closer to the double digit mark at 9.75 per cent in October
The retail inflation moved closer to the double digit mark at 9.75 per cent in October due to rising prices of food items such as sugar, pulses and vegetables.
NOTE:-According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released today, it was 9.73 per cent in the previous month. The highest rise in prices during the month was recorded by sugar, up 19.61 per cent, year-on-year basis. It was followed by edible oil which turned expensive by 17.92 per cent, while pulses were dearer by 14.89 per cent on the annual basis.
Vegetable rates during the month increased by 10.74 per cent while meat, fish and egg rates rose by 12.18 per cent. At the same time, clothing and footwear also witnessed an increase in prices at 10.47 per cent on an annual basis.
10. "EKUVERIN 2012" an India-Maldives joint military training exercise begins in Belgaum
The 4th joint military training exercise between the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) - EKUVERIN 2012 - is being held in Belgaum from November 12 to 25 to enhance the close military cooperation between the two countries. A total of 45 personnel from the MNDF are taking part in the exercises along with the personnel from the Indian Army.
NOTE:- The bilateral annual exercises, which commenced in 2009 in Belgaum, are alternately held in India and Maldives. The aim of the exercises is to enhance the close military cooperation between the two countries.
11. Two Indian-Americans in Forbes' education innovators list
Two Indian-Americans have been featured in the Forbes' top 15 education innovators list.
Indian-origin Datawind CEO and the man behind India’s low-cost tablet ‘Aakash’, Suneet Singh Tuli, along with MIT professor of science Anant Agarwal, who reinvented the concept of online learning called edX by combining online offerings of Harvard, MIT, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Texas have been featured on Forbes'list.
NOTE:- These classroom revolutionaries were featured for using innovative technologies to reinvent education for students and teachers alike.
12. Citigroup to pay Pandit, Havens more than $15 million each
Citigroup said it will pay $15.5 million to Vikram Pandit, its former chief executive who resigned from company last month, as well as to his top deputy.
The bank said on Friday the payments to Pandit and former Chief Operating Officer John Havens reflect the progress the bank made in 2012 and work they did in some earlier years.
13. Economic growth will be less than 6 percent: Survey
India's economic growth will be less than 6 % while inflation will remain in the range of 6-8% next year, according to chief financial officers of leading Indian firms.
NOTE:-The Eurozone crisis followed by slowdown in the US and increasing oil prices are expected to have the biggest impact on the Indian economy, according to a survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and McKinsey & Co among other CFOs (chief financial officers) of India.
14. Tata's Kalinganagar plant to start production by 2014
Tata Steel, the world's eighth-largest steelmaker, is expecting to commission the 1st phase of its proposed 6 -million-tonne per annum (mtpa) greenfield plant at Kalinganagar, Odisha in the 2nd half of 2014.
NOTE:- Tata Steels Vice President, Anand Sen said "In the first phase, the steel plant would start with 3 million tonnes per annum capacity. It is expected to be commissioned during the second half of 2014, that is anytime between July to December.
15. Nepal postponed plan to introduce budget
Nepal Government has decided to postpone it’s plan to introduce the budget. This follows a meeting the Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun had with president Dr, Ram Baran Yadav today in Kathmandu. NOTE:- Mr. Pun has briefed the President about the budget ordinance that the government was planning to recommend to the President. The Finance Minister said President Yadav had requested to hold the ordinance until after the Tihar holidays and asked the government to bring it only after forging consensus.
