DAILY GK UPDATE 31ST MARCH

1. Easter being celebrated today
i. Easter, marking the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ, on the third day of his crucifixion is being celebrated by Christians all over the world today with traditional religious fervour and reverence.

ii. In Vatican, during Saturday night's service, Pope Fransis 1st took part in an Easter vigil in St Peter's Basilica.
iii. Devotees in large numbers attended midnight mass and Easter prayers in churches all over the World.
iv. The day also marks the culmination of the 50-day fasting by the faithful.

2. Eighth India-Yemen Joint Committee Meeting Held in New Delhi
i. The Eighth Session of the India-Yemen Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (JCM) took place in New Delhi
ii. From the Indian side the meeting was presided by Sanjay Singh, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Yemeni side was led by the Deputy Minister of Planning & International Cooperation, Omer Abdulaziz Abdulghani.

Highlights of the Meetings
Both the country India and Yemen, agreed to further strengthen the mutually beneficial relations, through mutually cooperative ventures in the areas of Education & Training, Culture, Health, Hydrocarbons, Agriculture, Fertilizers, Trade, Investment and Security.

3. NTPC commissioned New Solar Power Project in Andaman & Nicobar
i. NTPC Ltd commissioned a 5-MW solar photo-voltaic power project at Port Blair in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
ii. The new solar photo voltaic power project is the first grid-connected project in these islands and also the first greenfield renewable solar PV project of NTPC.
iii. The project was commissioned in record time of six-and-half months sweeping over serious challenges like skilled manpower and machinery and inclement weather conditions.
iv. The project was basically executed by Photon energy Systems. Skilled manpower and equipment were arranged from the mainland through road, rail and sea route.

4. Narendra Modi inducted into BJP's Parliamentary Board
i. Bhartiya Janata party president Rajnath Singh has announced his new parliamentary board and a new team of the party today
ii. This time, the team inducted some new faces.
iii. After a gap of six years, party has re-inducted Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the parliamentary board.
iv. Modi's close associate Amit Shah, Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi and Rajiv Pratap Rudy have been appointed as general secretaries of the party.
v. Uma Bharti and Smriti Irani have been elevated as vice-president.
vi. BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that due representation has been given to women, youth and backward classes in the the new BJP team.

5. Rajan Bharti Mittal appointed president of ICC India
i. Bharti Enterprises Vice Chairman and Managing Director Rajan Bharti Mittal has been appointed the President of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) India.
ii. “Mr. Mittal has been appointed as the President of ICC India at the conclusion of 82nd Annual General Meeting of ICC India,”
iii. ICC India is the Indian affiliate of the Paris-based ICC, the world business organisation with presence in over 90 countries.

6. MP leads in growth rate
i. Madhya Pradesh leads major states of the country in respect of growth rate in the year 2012-13.
ii. As per the provisional data released by the Central Statistical Organization, CSO, for 2012-13 for the states, Madhya Pradesh’s Gross State Domestic Product, GSDP, for 2012-13 is likely to be 14.28 percent and agriculture growth rate about 10.02 percent.
iii. An important feature of these statistics is that this year Madhya Pradesh has occupied the top position in respect of GSDP by dislodging Bihar.
iv. Last year Bihar was on the top with 13.26 percent GSDP followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11.81 percent.

7. BSNL’s Internet capacity down due to cuts in undersea cable
i. Telecom PSU BSNL on Sunday said its Internet capacity has dropped by 21 per cent due to multiple fibre cuts in three under-sea cable systems that connect the country with many parts of the world.
ii. “Three major cables which are serving as the International Gateway Connectivity are affected because of the multiple fibre cuts,”
iii. “The Sea-Me-We-4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems are the ones affected. Because of this disruption, BSNL has lost around 21 per cent of its total international Bandwidth,” it added.
iv. The under-sea cable systems facilitate Internet and various telecom services and any disruption in these cables impact Internet speed and voice quality of telecom services.

8. DU's disabled students to get free Metro travel cards
i. The students of the disabled category of the Delhi University will be getting free-of-cost Metro rail cards from the next academic session 2013-14.
ii. The Delhi University last year had shot off a letter to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) for free Metro travel cards for its students who fall in the disabled category.
iii. The DMRC accepted the request of the DU few days ago, said DU Registrar Alka Sharma.
iv. The varsity is now working on the amount of recharge each disabled student will get every month in their Metro cards.
NOTE: Notably, nearly 1,250 students in the disabled category are undergoing various courses in the Delhi University and the varsity has already implemented the fee waiving scheme for them.

9. Iconic music producer Phil Ramone dies at 72
i. Phil Ramone, the legendary US music producer behind hits by Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Barbra Streisand, has died.
ii. He was 72. Ramone, a 14-time Grammy winner once dubbed the "Pope of Pop" - died in New York on Saturday after being hospitalised for weeks with an aortic aneurysm.
iii. The South African native spent most of his career in New York City, first as a songwriter and engineer and then co-launching A&R Recording studios in 1958.
iv. Ramone was known for his innovative use of technology and his support for the evolving formats in recording and production.

10. Hazare begins 'janatantra yatra' from Amritsar
i. Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare on Sunday embarked on his 'Janatantra Yatra' (walk for democracy) here to rally support against the Congress-led UPA Government in the run up to the next general elections.
ii. Accompanied by a small group of supporters, the 75-year-old activist paid obeisance at Durgiana Mandir and Golden Temple besides paying tribute to the martyrs at Jallianwala Bagh.
iii. Hazare said after five months a big Jan-Sansad (public rally) will be organised at Ramlila Ground in the national capital "which will seal the fate of this corrupt government".
iv. Hazare had floated 'Janatantra Morcha' after the protests on Lokpal Bill fizzled out and Team Anna split, with a faction led by Arvind Kejriwal forming a political party.
v. He will address eight public rallies in Punjab during the first phase of 'Janatantra Yatra'.

11. Serena Williams won Miami Masters open Tennis Tournament 2013
i. World No. 1 Serena Williams on 30 March 2013 won Miami masters open Tennis Tournament for record sixth time in Key Biscayne
ii. Serena Williams claimed the record equaling sixth title by winning the last 10 games to sweep by Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
iii. By winning the title, Serena Williams joined Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova as the only women to have won the same event six times.

NOTE: i. Miami Tennis tournament title is her 48th WTA career tour title.
ii. Serena Williams is a 15-time Grand Slam singles champion.
iii. She also became the oldest women's champion in Miami history, four months older than Evert when the legend won here in 1986 at 31 years and two months of age.
iv. It was the 11th match victory in a row for Williams over Sharapova.

12. Gujarat clinched Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Championship title
i. Gujarat had clinched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Championship title after registering a thumping six-wicket victory over Punjab in the summit clash today.
ii. Electing to bat, Punjab suffered a top-order collapse to be reduced to 20 for four in the sixth over before they recovered a bit to score 122 for eight in their allotted 20 overs at the Holkar Stadium. Gujarat chased down the target with 13 balls to spare.
