Union Science and Technology Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh has passed away today. He breathed his last at a Chennai Hospital as he was suffering from serious liver ailment. He was 67. His last rites will be performed tomorrow at his native village Babhalgaon in Latur district of Maharashtra.

Well known Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto was today honoured with the “Nisan-i-Imtiaz”, Pakistan's highest civilian award.

A MoU was signed between Ministry of Railways, Government of India and the Ministry of Mobility of Kingdom of Belgium as Deputy Prime Minister Didier Reynders of Belgium visited India.

30th Summer Olympics (London Olympics 2012) concluded in London on 12 August 2012. The 17-day event was inaugurated at Olympic Stadium at the Olympic Park in East London on 27 July 2012. London Olympics witnessed nearly 10500 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees participating in as many as 26 sports events.

US topped the medal tally with a total of 104 medals (46 Gold+29 Silver+ 29 Silver) followed by China, which bagged a total of 88 medals (38 Gold+27 Silver+23 Bronze). Great Britain with 65 medals (29 Gold+17 Silver+19 Bronze), Russia with 82 medals (24 Gold+26 Silver+32 Bronze) and South Korea with 27 medals (13 Gold+8 Silver+6 Bronze) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. India with a total of 6 medals (2 Silver+4Bronze) finished 55th on the medal tally.
India had sent 83-member team to the London Olympics 2012, which is the largest ever contingent sent by Indian Olympic Association in the Olympics. India’s total number of medals in London Olympics 2012 stood at a record haul of six medals.
6. A Web-based System developed for advising Farmers on Fertilizers
Indian Institute of Soil Science developed a web-based system for advising farmers the right quantity of fertilizers that they should use in their soils for a particular type of crop.
The software takes into account the soil type in different districts of the country and available nutrient in the soil and will also take consideration of the crop and cropping season in calculating the nutrient requirement.
7. India’s FDI Inflow plunged 53 Percent in April-June Quarter of Fiscal 2012-13
According to the FDI data released by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 10 August 2012, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow in India declined to 5.4 billion dollar in the April-June quarter of fiscal 2012-13. The figure stood at 12.2 billion dollar during the same period of fiscal 2011-12.

Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) on Monday announced a cash award of Rs 10 lakh to Sushil Kumar, who won a historic silver at the London Olympics, while Yogeshwar Dutt and boxer Mary Kom will receive a sum of Rs 7 lakh each for their bronze medal effort.

Agriculture Ministry has prepared contingency plans for 320 districts across the country to overcome severe drought conditions. The concerned States have been advised to prepare location-specific alternatives based on these plans. They have also been asked to be in touch with the agricultural Universities and arrange seeds of alternate crops to implement the plans
13. European rocket to launch Indian satellite GSAT-10 on September 22
India's latest communication satellite GSAT-10 with total weight of 3,400-kg and having minimum operational life of 15 years is slated to be launched from Spaceport's ELA-3 launch complex, Kourou in French Guiana on September 22. The satellite will be launched by European space consortium Arianespace's Ariane-5 rocket.
GSAT-10 would assist aircraft navigation over Indian airspace and in adjoining areas. It would provide communication services and augment the existing ones and will cost Rs 750 crore including launch services cost.

19. S&P assigns 'BBB-'rating to ICICI Bank's unsecured notes issue
Global ratings agency S&P today assigned 'BBB-' rating to the proposed issue of senior unsecured notes by the country's largest private sector lender ICICI Bank.
"The rating on these notes reflects the long-term counterparty credit rating on the bank," S&P said in a note. The bank is reportedly mulling to raise up to $1 billion through a bond sale with credit markets easing and bigger rival SBI managing to collect $1.25 billion through a bond sale last month.

- Balance of Trade stood at 15.5 billion dollar during July 2012 as compared to 14.8 billion dollar in July 2011.
