1. Organisation of Islamic Cooperation suspends Syria
The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has suspended Syria in a decision taken in OIC summit meeting in the Saudi holy city of Mecca . OIC chief Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said early today that the move sent a strong message to Damascus.
NOTE:- Syria was suspended from the Arab League last year over its clampdown on the uprising that Assad characterised as a plot by Western and rival powers to overthrow his regime.
2. SAIL to sponsor medal winners of London Olympics for next Olympics in 2016
Steel Authority of India (SAIL) will sponsor all medal winners of the London Olympics for the next Olympics to be held in 2016 at Rio De Janeiro. This was announced by the Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma in New Delhi today. He was speaking at a felicitation function of Medal winners in London Olympic 2012.
3. AP HC sets aside appointment of Dinesh Reddy as state’s DGP
Andhra Pradesh High Court today set aside the appointment of Dinesh Reddy as the Director General of Police of the state. A divisional Bench comprising Justices Raghuram and M S Ramachandra Rao has dismissed separate writ petitions filed by the state government and Dinesh Reddy separately challenging the orders of Central Administrative Tribunal which set aside the appointment of the Dinesh Reddy as DGP.
4. Govt to set up National Institute of Sports Sciences & Medicine
Government has decided to set up National Institute of Sports Sciences and Medicine to help sportspersons to excel in international events. Sports Minister Mr. Ajay Maken said the Institute will come up at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex in New Delhi. The Sports Ministry has also proposed to set up a training institute at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala.
5. SEBI allows e-IPOs, new routes for stake divestment
Markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) today announced allowing e-IPOs. To begin with, the option of e-IPOs will be available at over 1000 points for electronic bidding in public offers.
SEBI also allowed mutual funds flexibility in using expense charges.
SEBI will set up a committee for national mutual fund policy. The regulator has sought tax incentives in equity funds under Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme.
6. AC double-decker train for Jaipur flagged off
The much-awaited AC double-decker train flagged off by Railway Minister Mukul Roy today from Sarai Rohilla station.
The train will cover the distance between the national capital and the Pink city in about 5 hours.

Ecuador has granted asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange two months after he took refuge in its London embassy while fighting extradition from the United Kingdom.

With several hundred Pakistani Hindus arriving in India following alleged persecution, the government today said they will get long-term visas to stay in the country if they apply under stipulated rules.

The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre and all the state governments on a PIL seeking its direction for tracing 55,000 missing children in the country.

UN Security Council meets today to decide the fate of its Observers Mission in Syria. In a divided Security Council United States and the Western nations have said the unarmed UN Observers should not remain in Syria beyond August 20 when its extended and final 30 day term expires.
11. Science Express-biodiversity special train reached Madurai in Tamil Nadu Science Express-biodiversity special train reached Madurai in Tamil Nadu today. The train will be kept for public viewing at Madurai Kudal Nagar railway station from 10 Am to 6 PM till 19th of this month. This is the fifth phase of the science exhibition train which will halt at 52 railway stations all over India.
12. Pandit Nardevji Vedalankar choosen to be honored by India at the World Hindi Conference in Johannesburg
Pandit Nardevji Vedalankar, widely regarded as the Father of Hindi in South Africa, will be honored by India at the World Hindi Conference in Johannesburg next month by unveiling his bronze statue. Pandit Vedalankar pioneered the promotion of Hindi from the time he came to South Africa from India in 1947.

K. Vetriselvan , Addl Director General of Media and Communication, Press Information Bureau Trivandrum passed away in Chennai yesterday due to prolonged illness. He was 52 .
14. Railways has registered a a growth of over 26 per cent
Indian Railways has registered a a growth of over 26 per cent in revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of April to July. It has generated around 27515 Rs crore of revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic during these periods which is around 5695 crore rupees more than the revenue earnings of last year during the same period.
