DAILY GK UPDATE: 21st SEPTEMBER 2012

1. International Peace Day observed today
The International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is being observed today across the world.
The day is dedicated to observance of peace and specifically the absence of war and violence. It is also an occasion for adhering to temporary ceasefire in combat zones for providing access to humanitarian aid to the strife torn people.
2. Akanksha Salunkhe claims maiden International Squash Title
Goa's Akanksha Salunkhe has claimed her maiden International Squash Title.
NOTE:-In the final of the Iran Junior Open squash tournament in Tehran, she rallied to beat Kimiya Mohammed in straight games.
3. India test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-III ballistic missile
India today test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-III ballistic missile with a strike range of 3,000 km from Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast from a mobile launcher at launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island.
NOTE:-It was the fifth test in the Agni-III series carried out to establish the 'repeatability' of the state-of-the-art missile's performance.
4. TMC formally withdraws support to UPA Govt
Trinamool Congress, TMC today formally withdrew support to the UPA government. Its six Ministers also submitted their resignation.
NOTE:- The TMC which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha, handed over a letter withdrawing support to the government to President Pranab Mukherjee.
5. India, China to strengthen bilateral cooperation in tourism
India and China have decided to strengthen bilateral cooperation in tourism. Both the sides have also decided to organize a special programme in which experts on human resources development from both the countries can visit some of the hotel management institutes.
6. India, Pak sign three pacts to boost economic relations
India and Pakistan today signed three agreements for cooperation in customs matters, redressal of trade grievances and conforming to quality standards to further normalise economic relations between the two countries.
7. EC launches YUVA to increase youth participation in electoral process
Election Commission of India has launched an initiative to identify the missing and non-voters to bring them into the mainstream of voting. The Commission has also developed a YUVA strategy or Youth Unite for Voter Awareness to encourage increased participation of young women and men in the electoral process.
8. Centre approves Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme
Centre has approved a new tax saving scheme called the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme' (RGESS) with a view to provide tax benefits. The Finance Minsitry in its statement has said that the scheme is exclusively for first time retail investors in the securites market with annual income of below 10 lakh rupees in a financial year. The maximum investment permissible under the scheme is Rs. 50,000 and the investor would get a 50 per cent deduction of the amount invested from the taxable income for that year.
9. India, Britain sign MoU on urban regeneration & development
India and Britain have signed an MoU on urban regeneration and development. The MoU envisages promotion of cooperation in areas including sustainable master planning, transport planning and land economics. It also envisages promotion of cooperation in areas of heritage management, regeneration governance, regeneration capacity building and public private partnership financing arrangements.
10. Foreign Investment cap hiked to 74 percent for Broadcasting Services
Government of India  hiked the foreign investment cap for the broadcasting service providers to 74 percent. The registered hike in foreign investment cap is for service providers of Direct to Home (DTH), modernized cable network and mobile television.
NOTE:- This move of the government will allow the global players in acquiring major stakes in the broadcasting companies. Before this decision was passed, the eligibility of DTH and multi-system cable operators to make foreign investment was limited to 49 percent only.
11. Dinesh Thakur, the veteran actor-director died
Actor-director Dinesh Thakur, primarily remembered for his cigarette smoking serious looks in the films of 1970’s died. Thakur (65) died due to his prolonged illness.
12. Australian Cricketer, Matthew Hayden retired from all formats of the game
Matthew Hayden, the Australian Cricketer announced his retirement from all formats of Cricket. He also declared that he is not going to be a part of his team Brisbane Heat in the Australian domestic Twenty 20 series to be held this year.
13. Supreme Court refused to Review the petitions challenging Right to Education Act, 2009
The Supreme Court of India refused to review the petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Right to Education to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009.
NOTE:-The Independent Schools Federation of India, the Society for Unaided Private Schools of Rajasthan, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India with two other institutions filed PIL (Public-interest litigation) against the Act, for a review.
14. Forbes released the Annual Ranking List of 400 richest Americans
Forbes released the list of 400 richest Americans. Bill Gates with his total net worth of $ 66 billion managed to remain at the top position for 19th year in a row.
NOTE:- Warren Buffet of Berkshire Hathaway with net asset of $ 46 billion was at second position in the list. Larry Ellison of Oracle remained at third position with net asset of $ 41 billion.
15. GAAR Report submitted by the Shome Committee to the Finance Minister
The GAAR report was submitted to the finance minister of India by the Shome Committee constituted by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, after the approval of Prime Minister of India. NOTE:- The committee in its report has tried to create a balance in between the investors being invited to the country and protection of the tax base from tax avoidance and evasion, using aggressive tax planning.
