Martyrdom day of 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur is being observed today.
NOTE:- This day was marked with recitation of Gurbani Kirtan in the Gudwaras and religious processions at different places. Guru Teg Bahadur sacrificed his life in Chandni Chowk of New Delhi to save religion from the tyranny of the rulers of the day.
2. Ernest Bai Koroma Re-elected as President of Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone's president, Ernest Bai Koroma, has been sworn in for a second term after winning nearly 60 percent of the vote in yesterday's peaceful elections.
NOTE:- Koroma, who was first elected in 2007, has pledged to increase foreign investment and fight corruption. 2012 election was the first post-war election which Sierra Leone had organised itself, the other two held since the war ended in 2001 were run by the United Nations.
3. Arvind Kejriwal launched his political party with the name "Aam Admi Party"
Social activist Arvind Kejriwal today named his political outfit as "Aam Admi Party".The name was finalized at a meeting of its founder members held in New Delhi. During the meeting, the party’s Constitution was also adopted.
NOTE:- Kejriwal had on 2nd October announced the formation of the party, saying its official launch would be on 26th November, the day Constitution of India was adopted in 1949.
4. Maulana Syed Ahmad Hasan passes away yesterday
Noted Shia religious leader and Imam-e-Juma of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Maulana Syed Ahmad Hasan died yesterday after a prolonged illness. He was 65.
NOTE:- Maulana Syed Ahmad Hasan was an eminent scholar, poet and litterateur. His last rites will be performed in Varanasi today.
5. Mar Cleemis Thottunkal of Trivandrum elevated as cardinal by the Pope
The major Archbishop of the Trivandrum of the Siro-Malankaresi in India, His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal has been elevated as Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI.
NOTE:- He is among six priests, all non Europeans, appointed by the Pope at a service in the Vatican's St Peter's Basilica today.
6. National Cancer Institute and National Cardio Care Centre to be setup in Badhsa in Jhajjar district of Haryana
The National Cancer Institute and National Cardio Care Centre will be setup at the second campus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Badhsa in Jhajjar district of Haryana.
NOTE:- This was announced by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Gulam Nabi Azad there today. Azad said the second campus of AIIMS will be developed as a world class international level institution.
7. Ireland Govt orders 3rd probe into Savita Halapannavar's tragic death
Ireland has ordered a 3rd probe into NRI doctor Savita Halapannavar's tragic death at a Galway hospital earlier this month after her dentist husband Praveen claimed that crucial papers relating to her repeated requests for abortion were missing from the hospital's files.
8. All India Police Shooting Championship to be held in Jalandhar
Punjab Police is organizing the 6th All India Police Shooting Championship-2012 at Punjab Armed Police Headquarters in Jalandhar from Monday. More than 400 men and women shooters from 23 states, union territories and central police organizations including BSF, CISF, CRPF and ITBP will participate in the 5 day event.
NOTE:- Punjab Police is hosting the meet for the second time since its start in 2007.
Opening ceremony of the competition will be presided over by the DGP, Punjab Police, Sumedh Singh Saini.
9. Tamil Nadu Government, aided school students get smart cards
The State government of Tamil Nadu has introduced Smart Cards containing data on students. It will benefit over 91 lakh students in government and aided schools.
NOTE:- As a pilot project, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presented the cards to students of five government higher secondary schools in Tiruchi district on Saturday. The Smart Cards will have data such as the names of students, parents, their address, annual income, date of birth, admission details, pass percentage and so on.
10. Australia approved the plan to save the Murray-Darling Basin
Australia approved the plan to save the Murray-Darling Basin, an ailing river system. As per the plan, the sum total of five Sydney Harbour’s worth of water to the network every year.
NOTE:- Murray-Darling Basin river system is vital to the Australia’s food bowl. This river network is sprawling across 5 Australian states and covering the area of one million square kilometers. Two million tonnes of salt will also be flushed out each year under the plan.
The concerned river system affects the livelihood of millions of people, but due to overexploitation it is ailing now. It suffers from increased salt concentrations as well as depletion in its amount of water because of draught.
11. Portman Holdings Invested Rs. 65 Crore in Tata Housing Project
U.S.-based Portman Holdings invested 65 crore Rupees in Tata Housing luxury housing project based in Bangalore.
