DAILY GK UPDATE: 16TH JANUARY

1. Kamal Nath Elected As the Leader of Indian Delegation for World Economic Forum 2013: 
i. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh elected Kamal Nath, the Union Minister for Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, as a leader of Indian delegation for annual meetings for World Economic Forum which will be held in Davos from 23 to 27 January 2013.
ii. There will be other three members in the delegation and these involve Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Heavy Industry Minister Praful Patel and Commerce & Industry Minister Anand Sharma. 
NOTE: i. Kamal Nath being chosen as the leader of the delegation surprised the government because this is the first time when someone not from the ministries of finance or commerce is leading the delegation. 
ii. Back in 2006 as well, when the economy was at its boom, Kamal Nath launched India Everywhere campaign, depicting India as a lucrative destination for the investment purpose and for placing it in the top most table at the global level.

2.RBI governor to launch financial inclusion programme in UP district today: 
RBI Governor D Subbarao will today kickstart Financial Inclusion programme at Lalpur Karauta village in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. The RBI Governor yesterday met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow. The RBI Governor assured him that 3,000 new bank branches will be opened in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh by the end of 2014.

3. Sensex Crossed Crucial 20000 Mark after Two Years: 
The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex for second time in a row on 15 January 2013 touched 2-years high.  
The shares remained supported inspite of government’s delayed implementation of the controversial rules related to tax avoidance. 
NOTE: However, till the time the RBI reviews the policy on 29 January 2013, analysts are expecting that the earnings would remain crucial catalysts for the Indian shares, as the investors would look for the signs of profit improvement in 2013. Analysts predicted that in the fiscal year 2013-14, the Sensex EPS would grow by 13-14 percent.  

4. Mahindra Satyam Tied up with Japanese Firm TechMatrix for Healthcare Services: 
i. Mahindra Satyam on 15 January 2013 signed an agreement with the Japanese firm TechMatrix Corporation digging at business opportunities in the healthcare market in the Association of South-East Asian Nations region. 
ii. As per the pact Hyderabad Based firm Mahindra Satyam would also look at selling cloud-based healthcare solutions. 
iii. Mahindra Satyam is going to host the cloud and mobile-based services in Singapore and Malaysia, while providing direct sales and IT services to clients throughout throughout ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region. 
iv. Moreover, ICHIGO LLC, the subsidiary arm of TechMatrix is suppose to provide its Teleradiology network infrastructure product line and NOBORI, its cloud service for medical and healthcare information. 
NOTE: The major purpose of tie up between the two companies is to focus on delivering state-of-the-art healthcare solutions to public and private hospitals and image scanning centres, which is directly aimed at reducing healthcare costs while improving the quality of services.

5.Haryana retains U-20 National Women’s Hockey title: 
Haryana beat Uttar Pradesh by 1-0 at the finals. 
Haryana retained the Under-20 National Women’s Hockey title by defeating Uttar Pradesh at finals held at Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad. 
Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan gave away the trophy to Haryana at a ceremonial valedictory programme this evening.

6.Recruitment scam: Chautala convicted, sent to judicial custody: 
i. Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, his MLA-son Ajay Chautala and 54 others were on Wednesday convicted by a Delhi court for the illegal recruitment of over 3000 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers in the state. 
ii. The court has fixed January 22 for pronouncing the quantum of sentence, all the convicts were taken into judicial custody. 
iii. Apart from the Chautalas, Sanjiv Kumar, the then Director of Primary Education, Chautala's former Officer on Special Duty Vidya Dhar and Sher Singh Badshami, political advisor to the then Haryana CM were convicted by the court in the case. 
iv. The court had framed charges against them under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the IPC and and provisions of the PCA.  

7.Somdev out of Singles & Sania out of Women’s doubles in Australian Open: 
i. India's Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the Men's Singles section. Jerzy Janowicz of Poland edged past Somdev, in a five set game, 6-7, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, 7-5 in the second round. 
ii. In the Women's Doubles, the Indo-American duo of Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands bowed out, after losing to the Spanish pair of Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-7, 3-6 in the first round. 
NOTE: The Indo-Canadian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Daniel Nestor and the Indo-American duo of Rohan Bopanna and Rajeev Ram have advanced into the Men's Doubles second round of the Australian Open Tennis tournament at Melbourne.  

8. S.Africa retains top spot as world number one team in latest ICC rankings: 
i. South Africa retains its position as World number one team in the latest ICC Test cricket rankings followed by England and Australia. 
ii.  India continues to remain at the fifth spot after Pakistan. 
iii. Australia’s star batsman Michael Clarke maintains his top billing among the test batsmen. 
iv. He is closely followed by Protean Hashim Amla who replaces the Caribbean Shivnarain Chanderpaul at the second position. 
v. South African paceman Dale Steyn leads the pack of bowlers followed by fellow paceman Vernan Philander. 
vi . India’s Pragyan Ojha is the lone Indian to figure in top ten. He is placed ninth among the test bowlers. Jacques Kallis remains as the number one test All rounder with his versatile performance.  
The latest ICC teat rankings were released in Dubai yesterday.
