1.World Ozone Day is being observed today.
The day marks the importance of the Ozone layer and its role in the environment. It aims to make people aware to use Ultra violet protector sun glasses while exposed to sun and use products which are ozone friendly.
2.India and Maldives agree to step up defence cooperation for regional stability and maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
India and Maldives today agreed on a number of measures to step up their cooperation in defence and security related issues. The two sides also agreed to work closely towards stability in the region and ensure maritime security in the Indian Ocean. Marking a new high in defence cooperation between the two countries, New Delhi has decided to station a Defence Attache at Male’.
3.Finance Minister P Chidambaram advocates direct cash transfer of fuel, fertiliser and food subsidies.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram has advocated for direct cash transfer of fuel, fertiliser and food subsidies to prevent leakages. He said the major subsidies are projected to decline from 1.9 per cent of GDP as per the Budget Estimates for 2012-13 to 1.2 per cent in 2016-17. Also the direct cash transfer of subsidies will also help in reduction in subsidies' percentage of GDP.
4.Veteran communist leader and the Freedom Fighter A.M. Govindarasu passed away
A.M. Govindarasu (A.M. Gopu), the veteran communist leader and the Freedom Fighter passed away at Chennai. He was 83 year old.
NOTE:- Following his wish of not being cremated, his family members donated his body to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital.
5.New Zealand pacer Daryl Tuffey retired from both International and Domestic Cricket
Injury-plagued New Zealand pacer Daryl Tuffey announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket .
NOTE:- Tuffey represented New Zealand Auckland, Northern Districts over the course of his career, picking up 77 Test wickets and 110 ODI wickets in 123 matches.
6.India and Tajikistan signed six agreements during President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon visit to India
The President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon visited India from 1 to 4 September 2012. During this visit, India and Tajikistan signed six agreements in the field of sports, health, culture, education, labour, textiles and energy. It was also decided that India would increase training slots for Tajikistan from 100 to 150 under India Technology and Eco Training Programme.
7. Dhoni named as the captain for IIC ODI team of the year
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of Indian Cricket team has been named as the Captain of ICC’s ODI team of the year. Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are two more players from Indian squad to be selected in the ICC’s ODI team for the year. Dhoni has been nominated to be a member of the team for fifth consecutive year in a row.
8. India wins Davis Cup Asia Group I first round play-off by 5-0.
India has won the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I first round play-off by 5-0. The Indian youngsters Yuki Bhambri and Sanam Singh won the last two dead rubbers against New Zealand at Chandigarh today clean sweeping New Zealand.
9. Union Govt. sanctioned Rs.120 Crore promoting tourism in Puducherry.
In order to promote tourism, Government of Puducherry is focusing on promoting large scale projects through public private partnership.
Puducherry, a former French colony, will soon join hands with Malacca, former Portuguese settlement in Malaysia, to share and exchange expertise and ideas to promote tourism.
The center has also sanctioned 120 Crore Rupees for undertaking projects like Beach Tourism at Veerampattinum and Manapet and heritage spots in Puducherry and Villianur.
10.The Inter Ministerial Group (IMG) reviewing coal block allocations will meet tomorrow
The Inter Ministerial Group (IMG) reviewing coal block allocations will meet tomorrow to decide the fate of six more mines allocated to private firms that were issued notices for delaying production. As of now, the IMG has recommended cancellation of seven coal blocks to the Coal Ministry. The panel also recommended deduction of Bank Guarantee of some companies. The IMG is scrutinising 29 blocks awarded to private firms out of the total 58 which were given show-cause notices for delays in developing mines.
11.The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has extended the ban on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna
AITA has extended the ban on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna from the national team till June 30, 2014. Bhupathi and Bopanna had objected to partnering with Leander Paes at the London Olympics, following which AITA had sent two doubles team - one of Bhupathi and Bopanna, and the other of Paes and Vishnu Vardhan to the Olympics.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony, on a three-day visit to the Maldives today opened ‘SENAHIYA,’ a Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) hospital, established in Male with Indian assistance.
