DAILY GK UPDATE: 19TH OCTOBER

1. Five New Non-Permanent Member Countries Elected to UN Security Council
UN General Assembly elected five new non-permanent members to the Security Council. The New Members are South Korea, Luxembourg, Argentina, Australia and Rwanda.
The newly elected member countries are going to serve a two-year term in the powerful UN body that will begin on 1 January 2013.
NOTE:- The country of Republic of Korea and Luxembourg were elected to a two-year term in the UN Security Council in the second round of voting. Whereas, Argentina, Australia and Rwanda were elected earlier, to serve as new non-permanent members of the powerful UN body.
The five new members are going to replace Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa, whose term ends on 31 December 2012.
2. "The Folded Earth and A Free Man" won the  11th Economist Crossword Book Award
 The Folded Earth written by Anuradha Roy and A Free Man by Aman Sethi won the 11th Economist Crossword Book Award that was declared at Mumbai. 
The Folded Earth was successful in securing its position in the English Indian Fiction Category, whereas, A Free Man by Aman Sethi was successful in the category of Indian Non-Fiction books. 
NOTE:- The Crossword Book Award is among the prestigious literary awards in India, which recognizes the best Indian Writings and rewards them to make sure that the merit works reach easily reaches to wider audience group.  
3. First Ever India Biodiversity Award Presented in Hyderabad
Government of India in collaboration with United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) announced Biodiversity award 2012 in Hyderabad.
The winners of the awards were: 
Pir Jahania Jungle Suraksha Samiti from Odisha in the community stewardship category,
Shankarpur Village Gram Panchayat from Maharashtra in the category of decentralised management,
Van Utthan Sansthan from Rajasthan in the category of co-management and Periyar Tiger Reserve in the protected areas category.
NOTE:- The award recognizes the outstanding models of biodiversity governance across the country. The award was actually presented at ministerial reception of Eleventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
With the presentation of Award, the Minister of Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan announced that the India Biodiversity Awards will now be given annualy, to mark International Biodiversity Day on 22 May each year.
4. International biodiversity conference approves 30 decisions concerning biodiversity conservation
International Biodiversity Conference "CoP11" has approved only 30 decisions and kept the key decisions relating to Resource Mobilization pending during its plenary session. 
The plenary session has been adjourned for two hours after it approves 30 decisions pertaining to various aspects of Biodiversity conservation. The efforts are still underway to bring the member countries to a broad consensus over fund mobilization for achieving global biodiversity targets.
5. NMDFC disbursed over Rs 131 cr in first half of current fiscal.
National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation (NMDFC), has disbursed over Rs. 131 crore to more than 32,000 beneficiaries in the first half of the current fiscal. 
NOTE: - The amount was disbursed under the Term Loan and Micro Financing schemes of the NMDFC. 
6. India, Switzerland discussed bilateral cooperation in Transport sector
India and Switzerland discussed ways and means for enhancing cooperation in the field of Transport sector including roads and Railways. The Head of the Department for Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications of Switzerland Ms. Doris Leuthard called on the Minister for Road Transport and Highways Dr. C. P. Joshi in New Delhi in this regard. During the meeting. Mr. Joshi, said that varied geographical features and climatic conditions of India require different technology for constructing highways and expressways.
7.India and New Zealand sign five MoUs in the field of education
India and New Zealand today signed five Memoranda of Understanding, MoU in the different fields of education. The MoUs were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and visiting New Zealand's Minister for Tertiary, Education, Skills and Employment Steven Joyce. 
8. Union Cabinet Cleared 4000 Crore Rupees Plan to Tackle Japanese Encephalitis
Union Cabinet of India approved a Rs. 4038-crore Rupees comprehensive multi-pronged plan for prevention and control of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in the country.
NOTE :- The plan will implemented in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Assam within five years from 2012-13 to 2016-17.
9.SC asks SEBI to take action against Sahara group
Supreme Court  told the Market Regulator SEBI that it was duty bound to take action against the Sahara group for non-compliance of its directions relating to the refund of 24,000 crore rupees raised from investors through optionally fully convertible debentures (OFCDs).
10. Centre to launch Aadhaar based delivery system today
The much awaited Aadhaar enabled system for direct cash transfer to beneficiaries under social schemes such as MNREGA and pension will be launched on Saturday by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Dudu, Rajasthan.
