DAILY GK UPDATE: 20TH OCTOBER

1.Nation payed homage to 1962 India-China war heroes 
Nation today payed homage to those soldiers who lost their lives in 1962 Indo-China war.
NOTE:- The main function to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the day is being organised at Amar Jawan Jyoti near India Gate in New Delhi. Defence Minister A K Antony, Chiefs of the three services and other dignitaries paid their homage by laying wreaths.
2.PM launched Aadhar enabled services for direct Cash transfer and other benefits
Prime Minister rolled out the UPA government's ambitious direct cash transfer system and other Aadhar enabled services to eliminate fraud and corruption.
Launching the scheme on 2nd aniversary of Aadhaar project at Dudu near Jaipur in Rajasthan this morning Dr. Manmohan Singh said the government will use technology to bring transparency. He said the scheme aims at checking corruption and pilferage in schemes and to bring transparency in implementation. Cash benefits under the schemes will be transferred to the accounts of the genuine beneficiaries without mediators.
3.UIDAI is ready with Electronic Know Your Customer Service 
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is ready with electronic know your customer service which will pave the way for opening a bank account with the swipe of a finger.
NOTE:- 
i)The Aadhaar card will allow the use of finger prints instead of submitting photo-copies of identity and address proof for opening a bank account or getting insurance or a mobile connection.
ii) The facility of one-touch know your customer could start by next month after the government and other agencies like Reserve Bank of India notify the new norms and provide for Aadhaar Card as valid identity proof.
4.Supreme Court-appointed panel recommended a 10-year moratorium on all field trials of Genetically Modified (GM) food crops
Supreme Court-appointed panel has recommended a 10-year moratorium on all field trials of Genetically Modified (GM) food crops, including Bt Cotton.
In its interim report, the Technical Expert Committee (TEC), appointed by the Supreme Court, said, the present regulatory system and protocol for conducting the field trials were unsatisfactory and inadequate, requiring major changes, restructuring and strengthening.
5. 20 thousand students to get Akash tablets on 11th of next month: Sibal
Union Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal said that 20 thousand students will be given Akash tablets on 11th of next month this year at a function in New Delhi on the occasion of Education Day.
NOTE:- Akash will be available to the people in the next five to seven years.
He said that India has taken the initiative to provide tablet at such a reasonable price and the entire world is looking towards it.
6.India, Sri Lanka, Maldives holds meeting on Maritime Security in Srilanka
A trilateral meeting between India, Sri Lanka and Maldives on Maritime Security is being held in Galle in Sri Lanka. The meeting focuses on sharing of information on shipping and tsunami warning and setting up and extending of anti-piracy structures. The delegates expressed the need for better coordination of joint Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance. The meeting discussed setting up of trilateral mechanisms to prevent illegal poaching also.
NOTE:- Currently 23 crore residents have enrolled for an Aadhaar number, of which 21 crore Aadhaar numbers have already issued.
Aadhaar, is a 12-digit number, which serves as a proof of identity and address anywhere in the country. It is an online identity platform that can be accessed in real-time for authenticating beneficiaries and can be adapted by various user agencies.
