DAILY GK UPDATE: 21ST OCTOBER

1. Durga Puja being celebrated across country with religious fervor & festivity
Durga Puja is being celebrated in several parts of the country with traditional pomp and show. In West Bengal, people from all walks of life are visiting Durga Pandals to see idols on the Maha Saptmi day today, the first day of the four day long festival. The festivities kicked off Maha Sashti day, with the invocation of Devi Durga last evening.
The President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee is taking part at his family durga pooja at native village in Miriti in Birbhum district.

2. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh observe Police Commemorative Day
Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, Police Commemorative Day was observed today.
In a state level function in Haryana, the state DGP Ranjiv Singh Dalal today laid a wreath at Shaheedi Samarak at Panchkula Police lines to pay homage to around 574 jawans of various state and Central police and paramilitary forces, who sacrificed their lives in the cause of duty during last year in the country.
Chandigarh DIG, Alok Kumar lauded sacrifices made by these martyrs while protecting the security and integrity of the country.
3.Saina Nehwal wins Denmark Open Badminton Title
Olympic bronze-medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal has lifted the Denmark Open Super Series Premier Badminton trophy.
NOTE:- In the final at Odense today, Saina defeated Germany's Jialiane Schenk in straight games 21-17, 21-8 in just 35 minutes.
It is her 4th  title of the year and is also her second Super Series Premier title.
4. Romance King, film maker and director Yash Chopra passed away
Veteran film maker Yash chopra passed away today evening in Mumbai. He was 80. The renowned director was admitted to Lilawati hospital in suburban Bandra in Mumbai on the 13th of this month, after getting diagnosed with dengue.
5. Olympic Shooter Vijay Kumar Named Services Best Sportsman
London Olympic Shooter and silver medalist Vijay Kumar was honoured with the Services Best Sportsman award for 2012 at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi
NOTE:- The award which include trophy and cash award of one lakh rupees is generally given to the best sportsman from the three defence forces of Army, Air Force and Navy.

5.Martin Guptill won New Zealand Top Cricket Award
Opening batsman of New Zealand Cricket team Martin Guptill claimed the top honour at the New Zealand Cricket Awards in Auckland, winning the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for 2011-12.
NOTE:- Martin Guptill was also named ODI and Twenty20 player of the year, based on performances between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012.
6.Mumbai to have First Museum of Indian Cinema
Films Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India announced its plan of establishing a National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC). The Museum would be located in the Films Division Complex, Dr. G. Deshmukh Marg, Mumbai and is predicted to come up by June 2013. The development of the museum was planned to mark the occasion of Indian Cinema that will complete its 100 years of journey from the day of first screening of Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
7. SC Ordered States to have a Check on Sexual Exploitation of Women at Workplaces
Supreme Court of India made it mandatory for every state, union territory and regulatory bodies to bring in practice/operations the legal mechanism for implementation of the guidelines issued in Vishaka Case that requires the employers to observe and ensure prevention of sexual harassment of women at workplaces.
8. Japan Lifted Travel Advisory on Jammu and Kashmir
Japan in a step to testimony the fact that security situation in Jammu and Kashmir is improved, relaxed the travel restriction to the state for its nationals. The move to ease restrictions is valid for Srinagar and adjoining areas like Gulmarg.
 NOTE:- With lifting of Travel Advisory Japan became the second country among G8 nations to take this step. Earlier Germany in July 2011 had relaxed travel restriction to Jammu and Kashmir for its National
9. Kudunkulam nuclear plant to start producing power by next month
Minister of State in Prime Minister’s office V. Narayanasamy has said the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant will start functioning within a month. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai, he said uranium filling work at the plant has been completed.
NOTE:- The first unit of the plant being built with Russian collaboration is expected to go critical within the next 10 days and start producing power by next month. The second unit of Kudankulam will begin by March next year.
10. India’s Alankamony claims Ipswich Open women's squash title
Asian junior gold medallist Anaka Alankamony has claimed her second title and first one abroad in the women's professional squash tour. In the final of the Ipswich Open in Queensland today, the 18-year old Indian stunned top seed Kylie Lindsay of New Zealand.
