DAILY GK UPDATE: 14TH NOVEMBER

1. Nation remembers first PM Nehru on his 123rd birth anniversary
 Nation pays tribute to the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary today. A number of functions are being organised to mark the occasion. A host of dignitaries paid floral tributes to Pandit Nehru at his Samadhi Shanti Van in New Delhi.
NOTE:- The day is also celebrated as Children's Day throughout the country. Pandit Nehru, also known as the architect of modern India, had immense love for children and they used to call him Chacha Nehru.
2. EU approves over 6 million dollars support package for Egypt
European Union has approved a 5 billion-Euro that is 6.4 billion dollars financial support package for Egypt, Egyptian officials say. A statement by President Mohammed Mursi's office said the European Investment Bank, EIB, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, EBRD, would each provide two billion Euro.
The remaining one billion Euros would come from EU member states. The announcement came after Mr. Musi held talks with the EU's foreign policy-chief, Catherine Ashton, in Caior. In a statement , the presidency said the packages was a strong sing of the EU's support for Egypt's path to development.
3. Marcel Granollers & Marc Lopez won the ATP World Tour Final 2012
The Spanish pair of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez defeated the Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the Men's Doubles title clash of the ATP World Tour Finals in London. In the final match, the fifth seeded Indian duo went down fighting in a tight three-set game, 5-7, 6-3, 3-10.
4. Indira Raisom Goswami to be conferred with Asom Ratna
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced to confer Eminent litterateur Dr Indira (Mamoni) Raisom Goswami with the prestigious Asom Ratna posthumously
NOTE:- Goswami would be conferred with the award for her outstanding contribution to literature, art and culture and social service.
5. France recognised the New Syrian Opposition Coalition
France recognized the new Syrian Opposition coalition. France has become the first major nation to recognise the newly formed Syrian National Coalition of opposition and Revolutionaries as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
NOTE:- Arab League has granted Observer status to the bloc while the six nation Gulf Co-operation Council has already recognized it. Britain and European Union have stopped short of recognizing the bloc.  Britain stated that it wants to see more evidence that the opposition grouping has strong support inside Syria.
6. China unveils new leadership; Xi, Li elected as members of CC
China's ruling Communist Party unveiled a new generation of younger leadership, including Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang, as members of the key Central Committee to lead the world's largest political party and the second largest economy in the next decade.
NOTE:- The 18th CPC Central Committee will in turn elect the Politburo, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and the General Secretary of the party at its first plenary session in Beijing on Thursday.
7. 2G spectrum auction ends, less than Rs 10K cr bids received
The much talked about 2G mobile phone spectrum auction ended with half of the airwaves on offer remaining unsold and government getting just about one-third of the targeted revenue.
According to preliminary estimates, the government received bids worth "much-less" than Rs 10,000 crore in an auction that ended in two days, a far cry from the 35-day bidding for the 3G spectrum in 2010 that got Rs 67,719 crore.
NOTE:- The government was targeting Rs 28,000 crore from the sale of 2G spectrum in the GSM band.
8. Growth of 7 pc feasible next fiscal: Assocham
A majority of corporate honchos feel that reviving India's overall economic growth to 7 %  will be feasible in the next fiscal, a survey by industry body Assocham.
According to Assocham's confidence Index, "After a subdued Diwali this financial year, India Inc will certainly see a sparkle in the festive season of 2013-14 on the back of manufacturing and exports returning to growth".
9. Inflation eases to 7.45 %
The annual rate of WPI (wholesale price index)-based inflation eased a tad to 7.45 per cent in October from 7.81 per cent in the previous month even as select food commodities continued to rule at higher levels.
NOTE:- Although the inflation level this October was markedly lower as compared to the high of 9.87 per cent during the same month a year ago, the fact that it remained sticky at over 7 per cent at a time when the CPI (consumer price index)-based retail inflation has been hovering near the 10 per cent-mark may bring hardly any comfort to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for easing interest rates during the mid-quarter review of its monetary policy on December 18.
10. Belarus Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich sought more Indian investments 
Belarus Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich today sought more Indian investments in his country, asking business leaders to increase cooperation in sectors like heavy engineering goods and fertiliser to boost economic ties.
NOTE:- Accompanied by a business delegation, Myasnikovich, said both sides can increase engagement in sectors like pharmaceuticals,biotechnology and information technology. He was addressing captains of industry in New Delhi today. He is on a day-long trip to India.
11. Nokia Slips to Seventh in Smartphone Market
Nokia Corp. sank to seventh place in the booming global smartphone market in the third quarter, as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. maintained their hold on a segment once dominated by the Finnish company.
NOTE:- Nokia accounted for 7.2 million, or 4.3%, of the 169.2 million smartphones sold world-wide in the latest quarter, taking the company down from 3rd place in the prior three-month period, research firm Gartner Inc. said.
