1. Human Rights Day is being observed across the globe today
This year, the objective is to highlight rights of all people including women, minorities, persons with disabilities and the marginalised people as well as to make their voices heard in decision making processes.
NOTE:- On this day in 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
2. India and Ukraine sign 5 pacts
India and Ukraine today signed five agreements to enhance cooperation including in areas of defence, Nuclear energy, Science and Technology and also to remove barriers for trade. The two countries also agreed to raise the bilateral cooperation to a Comprehensive partnership level. The pacts were signed at the end of delegation level talks between visiting Ukraine President Victor Yanukovich and Prime Minister Manmohnan Singh at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
NOTE:- Bilateral trade between the India and Ukraine had doubled in the last five years to nearly 2.9 billion dollars.
3. Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram Selected For K Karunakaran Foundation Award
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram was selected for K Karunakaran Foundation award for his brilliant administration.
NOTE:- The award is being offered in the memory of renowned Congress leader as well as the former Kerala Chief minister K Karunakaran. It includes 1 lakh Rupees as well as citation.
4. Australia Won Hockey Champions Trophy for the 5th Consecutive Year
At the Champions Trophy 2012, Australia won once again, adding to fifth victory consecutively after it earned a 2-1 win in a match against Netherlands in Melbourne.
For the Netherlands, it was silver medal with the silver lining. The bronze was claimed by Pakistan after they beat India 3-2 on a match.
5. Devendra Lal, the Renowned Geophysicist Died At 83
Devendra Lal, the renowned geophysicist as well as the visiting professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), University of California died at 83 on 1 December 2012. He passed away at his home in San Diego.
6. India to sign Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in criminal matters with 4 other nations
India would sign Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in the criminal matters with four other countries in 2013. The treaty in general helps in mutual assistance between two nations for preventing, investigating as well as prosecuting crime.
NOTE:- Discussions on treaty were initiated already with four countries namely Azerbaijan, Israel, Nepal and Oman. Ministry of Home Affairs announced that formal signing of this treaty will take place in 2013.
7. Lionel Messi set the Record for most Goals in a Calendar Year
Lionel Messi, the renowned soccer player set the record for most goals in a calendar year by scoring his 86th goal of 2012. He set the record while scoring the winning goal against Real Betis. Messi's record included 12 for Argentina and 74 goals for Barcelona in 66 games. The earlier record was made by Gerd Mueller who had scored 85 goals in 1972 which included 72 goals for his club Bayern Munich and 13 for his country West Germany.
8. The 2nd Meeting on India-China Border Affairs held in New Delhi
The 2nd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs was held in New Delhi on 29-30 November, 2012. The discussions took place in a cordial, constructive and cooperative atmosphere. The two delegations reviewed developments in the India-China border areas since the 1st meeting of the Mechanism and acknowledged with satisfaction that peace and tranquillity continued to be maintained due to the efforts of both sides.
9. United Nations assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has convened consultation meetings in preparation for an inclusive intra-Afghan dialogue.
A statement issued by the UNAMA in Kabul today said this dialogue is non-official and intended to provide Afghan people with the opportunity to informally present and discuss their future visions of Afghanistan.
NOTE:- These consultations will engage representatives of civil society, women’s groups, political leaders and religious figures to obtain their views on how the informal dialogue process should be organized. UNAMA’s role in the process is limited to hosting the meetings and facilitating dialogue among Afghans of all political stances and backgrounds. According to the statement the purpose of the dialogue is to support and Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process of peace and reconciliation.
1O. Russia delivers 3 upgraded MiG-29s to India
Russia has delivered the first three of the upgraded MiG-29 fighters to India, more than 2 years behind schedule.
The planes were flown to India aboard an AN-124 heavy lift transport aircraft.
NOTE:- The MiG-29s have been equipped with new avionics, weapons, radar, glass cockpit, helmet-mounted displays and an inflight refuelling system.
