DAILY GK UPDATE: 12TH DECEMBER

1. Bihar received the Silver Icon Web Ratna Award 2012
Bihar's public grievance redressal website received the Silver Icon Web Ratna Award 2012.
NOTE:- The public grievance redressal website http://www.bpgrs.in/ has been developed by the state government as an e-governance initiative and has various features for quick and transparent disposal of complaints. The complainant is also intimated on his/her e-mail about the action taken.
2. Pandit Ravi Shankar, the Indian sitar Maestro Passed away in California
Renowned Indian sitarist and Bharat Ratna Recipient Pandit Ravi Shankar passed away in San Diego city of California. He was 92 years old.
3. BB Nimbalkar, India’s Highest Scorer in First class cricket Passed away
close to breaking Sir Don Bradman's first-class score in the Ranji Trophy, passed away due to age related ailments in his residence in Kolhapur on11 December 2012 just one day shy of his 93rd birthday.
Nimbalkar, holds the record for the highest individual first-class score by an Indian - 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar at Poona Club in December 1948. 
Nimbalkar had claimed that he was not aware of Bradman's record at the time of batting, else he would have batted faster.
4. Vinod Rai Re-Elected As Chairman of UN Panel of External Auditors
United Nations gave Vinod Rai, the comptroller and auditor general of India a second term as the designation of chairman of UN Panel of External Auditors for 2013. CAG of the UK, Amyas Morse was re-elected as the vice-chairman. 
NOTE:- Panel of the United Nations is the deciding body of the course as well as subject of audit of the different UN organisations which also include International Atomic Energy Agency.
5. Retail Inflation Increased to 9.9% in November 2012
Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released recently showed that the retail inflation increased for the second successive month to 9.90 percent in November 2012 mainly because of the increase in price of food products like edible oil, sugar, vegetables as well as clothing. In October 2012, the retail inflation was 9.75 percent and in September 2012, it was 9.73 percent. 
6. Union Government Spent Over Rs. 1768 Crore  for Its Own Promotion: I&B Ministry
 Union Government spent more than Rs. 1768 crore in previous 3 years for its own promotion, revealed the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry. 
NOTE:- I&B Ministry revealed that the Directorate of Audio-Visual Publicity (DAVP) spent a total of Rs. 1768.55 crore in publicity as well as advertisements in magazines and newspapers as well as on television. Most of the money was spent on newspaper advertisements with Rs. 375.31 crore from 2011 to 2012. Spending on newspaper advertisement in 2012 is Rs. 99 crore. 
7.  5 wrestlers suspended for testing positive during Senior National Wrestling Championship
5  wrestlers which also include four medalists were tested positive on banned substances during Senior National Wrestling Championship at Gonda, Uttar Pradesh which was held from 8 November 2012 to 11 November 2012. 
NOTE:- All 5 wrestlers were provisionally suspended while they have pending hearing against them. All these wrestlers agreed to B Sample testing which would be conducted soon. 
8. Scientists Developed a 100 Times Faster and Sensitive Laser Explosives-Detection Device
Scientists of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in the second week of December 2012 developed an all-new 100 times sensitive and faster laser device than any other explosives-detection device, for detecting even the minor traces of explosives.
NOTE:- The sample which is pulsed, cavity ring-down spectrometer, quantum laser-based is currently being tested in New Mexico at Los Alamos National Laboratory of US government.
9. India's Foreign Trade in November 2012: Exports valued at 22299.63 Million Dollars
As per the data released by Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry exports and imports during November 2012 were valued at 22299.63 and 41586.90 million US dollars respectively. 
NOTE:- The trade deficit for April - November 2012-13 was estimated at 129500.18 million US dollars which was higher than the deficit of 122638.35 million US dollars during April -November 2011-12.
10. Infosys Shares started Trading on New York Stock Exchange
Infosys Ltd, India’s second-largest IT services provider announced that its American Depositary Shares (ADS) have started trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol INFY.
NOTE:- The company is also in the process of listing its ADS on the Paris and London exchanges of NYSE Euronext. Earlier in the month of December the company had announced transfer of its NASDAQ-listed ADS to NYSE, which basically aimed to give its European investors better access to its stock.
