DAILY GK UPDATE: 14th SEPTEMBER 2012

1. Govt allows 51 pc FDI in multi-brand retail
Union Cabinet today decided to operationalise 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail but left it to the state governments to allow setting up of such stores.
It has also tweaked the sourcing norms for FDI exceeding 50 percent in single brand retail, requiring foreign firms, which want a relaxation of the 30 percent procurement norms, to set up manufacturing facilities in the country.
2. UP Government launched the Samajwadi Swasthya Seva in the State
Uttar Pradesh state government today  launched the “Samajwadi Swasthya Seva”, the biggest emergency medical transport service in the country. The ambitious service was launched in 13 districts - Mainpuri, Etawah, Lucknow, Kannauj, Saharanpur, Meerut, Rampur, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar, Sambhal, Shamli, Baghpat and Ambedkarnagar - in the first phase.The facility can be availed free of cost by dialling 108. The ambulance service was launched with the help of a private service provider.
3. CCEA approves disinvestment in 4 PSUs
Union Govt. today approved sale of its minority stakes in four public sector firms — Hindustan Copper, Oil India, MMTC and Nalco — to raise up to Rs 15,000 crore. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has, however, not taken any decision on disinvestment of Neyveli Lignite, which was also on the agenda.
4. Broadcast sector reform: FDI upto 74 pc to be allowed
In a major decision to liberalise the broadcast sector, the government has decided to raise FDI cap to 74 percent in various services of the sector, except the TV news channels and FM radio where the cap of 26 percent will apply.
5. Manmohan Singh flaged off Kochi Metro Rail project today
Kochi Metro Rail project moved a step closer to becoming a reality with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laying its foundation. In his address, the Prime Minister said the Centre would support 19 cities with a population of over two million each to prepare detailed project reports for Metro rail projects.
6.Bhakti Kulkarni becomes Goa's first woman Grandmaster
Bhakti Kulkarni became Goa's first Woman Grandmaster after the World Chess Federation officially cleared her title at 83rd FIDE Congress in Istanbul.
7. Centre bans web pages carrying controversial anti-Islam film
The Central Government has banned on internet a controversial film offensive to Islam. The Home Ministry has forwarded a request to Jammu and Kashmir Government to block all web pages where the film is available.
8. Japan unveils plan to phase out nuclear power by 2030
Japan has unveiled a plan to phase out nuclear power by 2030, in a major policy shift after last year's Fukushima disaster. Under proposals put forward by a government panel, the reactors would be shut down completely by the year 2040.
9. Kerala govt to soon set up Maritime Board
The Kerala government will soon set up a Maritime Board in the state, which will act as a single window of facilitation for investors and operators in the port, shipping and logistics sector.
10. Chhattisgarh HC annulled the Land acquired by the Government
Chhattisgarh High Court annulled the acquisition of thousand acre of fertile land in Raigarh as well as in Champa–Janjgeer districts of the state. It had been taken away from farmers by the Chhattisgarh state government for setting up power station.
