1. RBI cuts CRR by 0.25%, keeps key rates unchanged
Reserve Bank of India released the second quarter review of monetary policy 2012-13. In order to release liquidity into the system to support growth and credit lending to productive sectors the RBI has reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio(CRR) by 25 basis points from 4.50 per cent to 4.25 per cent.
NOTE:- The CRR is the amount of money that banks have to keep with RBI. The CRR cut will inject an additional liquidity of Rs 17,500 crores in the banking system. The cut will be effective from November, 3rd this year.
2. India retained third spot in ICC ODI ranking
India retains the third spot in the ICC ODI ranking after England and South Africa. Virat Kohli is at number 2nd among the batsmen while R. Ashwin ranks fourth position among the bowlers. The latest ICC rankings were released in Dubai today.
England has retained the top spot in the latest ODI rankings with 121 points followed by South Africa. India is at a close third position with 120 points.
Among the batsmen Protean Hashim Amla maintains his top billing with runs flowing from his blade.
3. Kerala banned entry of poultry from other states
Kerala today banned entry of poultry from other states following detection of avian influenza in a central government farm at Hesserghatt in southern Karnataka.
Following an intimation in this regard from the Karnataka Government, the state Animal Husbandry Department banned movement of poultry from both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
4. Cyclonic storm Nilam intensifies, set to hit TN-Andhra coast tomorrow
Cyclonic storm ‘NILAM’, has intensified. It is centered at 450 km south east of Chennai and 130 km North North east of Trincomalee. According to Met office the system is likely to move North north westwards and cross North Tamilnadu and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh Coast between Cuddalore and Nellore near Chennai tomorrow evening at 100 kilometer per hour.
5. Centre to roll out direct cash transfer of food subsidies in six Union Territories through the PDS within two months.
Centre will roll out within two months the direct cash transfer of food subsidies on a pilot basis in six Union Territories through the public distribution system. Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State food ministers conference that concluded in New Delhi today, Food and Public Distribution Minister, K.V Thomas said, the Centre has also sought the views of state governments on the alternate model. He said, the pilot scheme in the UT's will be tested in the meantime.
The alternative model involves movement of foodgrains at near market prices up to the ration shops levels and transfer of food subsidy to the beneficiaries bank accounts so that food subsidy reaches the intended beneficiaries and is not cornered by vested interests. Mr. Thomas said, the move would go long way in curbing leakages of foodgrains meant for ration shops.
6. 3rd Worldwide Cybersecurity summit held in New Delhi
3rd Worldwide Cybersecurity summit concluded in New Delhi today. Government said that it will invest around 200 million U.S. dollars in next four years to strengthen cyber security infrastructure. Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal said that priority for India at present is to protect its infrastructure like nuclear, aviation, banking infrastructure, among others also global community must come together to resolve cyber security issues.
7. DMRC Bagged Prestigious Japanese Award
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was awarded the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Award for 2012 for its outstanding contribution to the development of human resources, society and economy of India and also for promoting mutual understanding between India and Japan.
NOTE:- The award was formally presented to DMRC Managing Director Mangu Singh at a function organised at Metro Bhawan in Delhi for Delhi Mass Rapid Transport System Project (I) – (VI)
Also, a commendation certificate along with a tribute to this effect duly signed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka was presented to Mangu Singh who asserted that it will go a long way in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
8. Uttarakhand Named best Performing States in terms of Environmental standards
Uttarakhand topped the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) list of being best-performing States and Union territories in terms of environmental well-being released by Planning Commission.
Uttarakhand is followed by Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Sikkim, and Andhra Pradesh on the Planning Commission’s Environmental Performance Index (EPI) list. Environmental well-being is one of the considerations for decentralization of funds to the States under the Gadgil formula.
The State of Uttarakhand was given a cumulative score point of 0.8123 which is followed by Himachal Pradesh with score point of 0.7316, Chandigarh with 0.7270, Sikkim (0.7149), and Andhra Pradesh with 0.7147 of Score point.
NOTE:- Mizoram, Kerala, Goa, Sikkim, Tripura, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar, with an average score of 1, were ranked as the best States in terms of air quality.
Amazingly, except for Uttarakhand, all the States met the prescribed national ambient air quality standard in respect of the sulphur dioxide which is of 20 micrograms per cubic metre.
9. Pankaj Advani won World Billiards Championship Title
Indian Billiards Player Pankaj Advani won the 7th World Billiards Championship Title after comprehensively beating defending champion and seasoned Englishman Mike Russell in the finals of World Billiards Championship 2012.
The event was scheduled at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds, England where Pankaj scored 1895 points and Russell managed to score only 1216 points losing to Pankaj Advani.
10. Amitabh Bachchan Got Best TV Host Award for KBC
Amitabh Bachchan, was rewarded as the ‘Best Television Host’ for the popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ by People’s Choice Award of Colour Television channel.
NOTE:- Amitabh is presently hosting Season 6 of Kaun Banega Crorepati, which is being aired on Sony channel. He had earlier hosted 5 seasons of KBC except for the third one, which was hosted by Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan.
