DAILY GK UPDATE: 31ST OCTOBER

1. Ashok Tomar appointed India’s ambassador to Brazil
Ashok Tomar has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Brazil.
NOTE:- Mr. Tomar is presently Special Secretary at the headquarters.
2. India assumes Presidency of UNSC
India will assume the month-long rotating Presidency of the UN Security Council beginning Thursday before its term as non-permanent member of the powerful 15-nation body ends this year.
NOTE:- India had last served as President of the UNSC in August 2011. Its two year term on the Council will end on December 31.
India, seeking permanent membership of the Council, has also been stressing on reform and expansion of the UN body and it could focus on the issue during its Presidency.
3. India, Us And Japan Held Trilateral Meet And Talked On Cooperation
India, U.S. and Japan on its 3rd trilateral meet discussed trilateral cooperation in maritime security and a route through middle or north of Myanmar leading up to Hanoi.
The other major area of discussion was on exchanging of proposals for doing projects together in Africa as well as cooperating on the economic side in Afghanistan.
4. India and UK Amended pact on Avoidance of Double Taxation
India and the United Kingdom signed a protocol amending the 1993 bilateral convention on avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion related to taxes on income and capital gains.
The Protocol amends the pact or Convention that was originally assigned on 25 January 1993 in New Delhi.
NOTE:- The amended protocol is going to provide tax stability to the residents of both the countries and also facilitate mutual economic cooperation with stimulating flow of investment, technology and services.
5. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dave Kissoon Resigned from West Indies Players’ Association Board
West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan resigned from the board of the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA).
NOTE:-The resigning of Ramnaresh Sarwan came with resignation of Dave Kissoon, the director of West Indies Players' Association (WIPA). Dave Kissoon, recently had presided over the court cases concerning player contracts and a disputed memorandum of understanding involving WIPA and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
Ramnaresh sarwan had resigned from WIPA executive to patch up with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and he is in way to make his presence back into the national team.
6. Badminton Player Peter Gade Retired From International Career
Danish legend Baminton Player, Peter Gade retired from international badminton after his three-game defeat against compatriot Jan O. Jorgensen of Denmark.
Peter Gade is five-time European Champion in Year (1998, 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2010).
NOTE:- Peter Gade has 22 Super series and Grand Prix titles under his name and took 5 medals at World Championships:
 7. Lionel Messi won Golden Boot Award as Europe’s top Scorer
Lionel Messi, the Barcelonean forward footballer won Golden Boot Award. Messi won the award in recognition to his record 50 goals scored in the Europe’s domestic football league in the last session.
NOTE:-This is the second Golden Boot award for Messi, as he won his first Golden Boot Award in the year 2010 after scoring 34 goals during Argentina International to help Barcelona win the league title. He is also in the list of the favorites to win the 2012 Ballon d’Or for the World’s best player.
8. Union Government of India Approved Indo-Pak Cricket Series
Union Home Ministry mentioned that it had cleared the Pakistan cricket team’s India visit later this year after detailed discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials on issues related to security and visas for fans who will be visiting for the limited-overs series.
9. National Transparency Portal for PDS launched
Ministry of Consumer Affairs launched a National Transparency Portal for Public Distribution System. The portal has been developed with the objective of providing all PDS related information through a single platform in the public domain.
NOTE:- It may be accessed at http://pdsportal.nic.in. The portal contains information relating to Fair Price Shops and ration cards attached to these shops.
10. Film lyricist & poet Gulzar gets Indira Gandhi award for National Integration
The Indira Gandhi award for National Integration for 2011 has been given to noted film lyricist and poet Gulzar in recognition of his contribution to national integration.
NOTE:- The award carrying five lakh rupees and citation, was presented by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at a function in New Delhi this evening.
11. Hamid Rahimi want first professional boxing championship in Afghanistan’s history
Hamid Rahimi has won the first professional boxing championship in the history of Afghanistan by defeating Said Mbelwa of Tanzania in Kabul last night.
NOTE:- Afghan born middleweight boxer Hamid Rahimi stopped Mbelwa in the seventh round in technical knockout. Organized by the World Boxing Union the championship named “Afghanistan fight for peace” was held in the Loya Jirga hall of central Kabul before three thousand spectators with millions watching it on the telivison across the country. With this win Rahimi has also earned a spot in the top 15 middleweight world rankings.
12. National Junior Athletic championships concluded in Lucknow
 Uttar Pradesh, 28th National Junior Athletic Championship concluded in Lucknow today.
The five day event which began on 27th October in Guru Govind Singh Sports College, Lucknow, was declared closed by Union Coal Minister, Shriprakash Jaisawal.

NOTE:-It also bagged the best overall female team championship award, whereas Haryana won the title of overall male team championship award. The event witnessed the breaking of 14 national records and 35 meet records. Rajendra Kumar Bind of Uttar Pradesh won the title of best athlete.
13. Storm Sandy kills 50/Losses worth over 20 billion dollars
Devastating storm Sandy which pummelled the US east Coast and killed over 50 people, is expected to result in economic losses totalling over 20 billion US Dollars, according to estimates by a catastrophe forecasting company. As the states of New York and New Jersey, the worst hit by the monster storm, begin the recovery process, experts believe the losses will add up to over 20 billion Dollars.
