DAILY GK UPDATE: 1st OCTOBER 2012

1. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force marked the 50th year of its raising 
Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force today marked the 50th year of its raising.
NOTE:- ITBP, a border guarding force along the Sino-Indian border, was raised in October, 1962 in the wake of Chinese aggression. The force guards the 3,488-km-long Sino-Indian frontier, besides rendering a host of internal security duties including anti-Maoist operations, apart from taking part in many United Nations peacekeeping missions.
2. A commemorative postage stamp marking the 50th year of raising of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force released
A commemorative postage stamp to mark the 50th year of raising of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was released by Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot in New Delhi yesterday.
 NOTE:- The Rs. 5 denomination stamp, developed and designed by the postal department, depicts 3 armed ITBP commandos donning their camouflage white and grey fatigues with the icy Himalayan peaks in the background. The special stamp is embossed on a five-rupee ticket.
3. Government to finalise guidelines for implementation of General Anti Avoidance Rules by the end of this month.
Centre today said that the guidelines for implementation of General Anti Avoidance Rules (GAAR) will be finalised by the Income Tax department by the end of this month. Talking to reporters in New Delhitoday the Finance Minister P Chidambaram said  GAAR rules will be first vetted by the Law Ministry. After that the ministry would finalise its report and then consider if there was a necessity to amend the Income Tax Act.
4. Sanjay Mitra appointed as new Chief Secretary of West Bengal
Sanjay Mitra was appointed as the new Chief Secretary of West Bengal on 30 September 2012.
NOTE:- An IAS officer from 1982 batch, Mitra who was serving as the Principal Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department took over the office from Samar Ghosh at the State Secretariat.
5. Indian Exports decline by 9.74% yr-on-yr in Aug 2012
Indian Exports declined by 9.74 % year-on-year to 22.3 billion US dollars in August this year due to the global economic recession. Imports also slipped by around 5 % to about 38 billion US dollars, leaving a trade deficit of 15.7 billion US dollars.
6. Shadman Chowk renamed as Bhagat Singh Chowk in Lahore
The Shadman Chowk in the eastern city of Lahore (Pakistan) on 29 September 2012 was renamed as Bhagat Singh Chowk on the 105th birth anniversary of the revolutionary freedom fighter and martyr, Bhagat Singh. This came up in result of the demand from the peace activists for renaming the Chowk by the name of Bhagat Singh.
7. Latest Life Expectancy data for women and men in India Released
According to the Latest Life Expectancy data, life expectancy at birth for women is 67.7 years while for men it stood at 64.6 years.
8. Assam Government ordered a CBI Probe into attacks on Rhinos from Poachers
The Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi ordered a probe from CBI into the recent incidents of Rhino Poaching and announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh to the one providing information about the poachers.
NOTE:-  The large mammals were poached for their horns recently in Karbi Anglong hills who escaped from the protected area of the flood affected Kaziranga National Park.
9. Punjab Government started a massive door-to-door Cancer Detection Campaign
The biggest door-to-door campaign to detect cancer at early stage was launched on 30 September 2012 by the Punjab Government. The Pilot trial of the project will start in Faridkot district of Punjab for a complete month of October and will be implemented across the state in December 2012. The Cancer detection survey involving 50,000 personnel aims at detecting the cancer at its initial stage in a population of over 1.25 crore.
10. Tunnel joining the Amber Palace and Jaigarh Fort unveiled for Tourists
The tunnel that connects the two monuments of historical importance Amber Palace and Jaigarh Fort in the capital city Jaipur of Rajasthan was inaugurated by the Diya Kumari of Jaipur Royal Family and former Rajasthan Tourism Minister Bina Kak. The tunnel is now open for the tourists as well as the historians.
